With six portables already delivered by
the first day of school, Bevis Elementary in FishHawk Ranch
is now waiting for delivery of at least six more. The elementary
school, open just four years, is filled to 119 percent capacity
with more students moving into the flourishing FishHawk Ranch
subdivision everyday.
School district officials approved fasttracking
of a new elementary school for FishHawk Ranch in late August.
The school, scheduled to open Fall of 2005, will now open
next fall to alleviate overcrowding.
Last Spring, the school district approved
moving the elementary school from a parcel adjacent to FishHawk
Trails, to one at near the intersection of the under-construction
FishHawk Crossings Blvd. and Dorman Rd.
For two years, Bevis Elementary has scored
an 'A' grading on the state's school grading scale.
FishHawk Ranch resident Lynn La Roe special
assigned her son to Bevis elementary for six months before
moving into the community so both her children could attend
"I did a lot of research and spent
a lot of time calling schools in the area," explains
La Roe. "I specifically chose Bevis and now my son will
be a part of the first class that graduates from a full six
years at Bevis Elementary."
"It didn't take us more than a few
months into my son's kindergarten year at Bevis to decide
to move to FishHawk, so we would never have to risk not being
special assigned in the future."
The district will plan public meetings
in upcoming months to determine boundaries and architecture
of the new elementary school. Bevis and Pinecrest elementary
students will be affected.
At opening in 2000, Bevis had less than
350 students, this year enrollment passed the 1,100 mark.
Traffic Changes For Bevis Parents
In August, Newland Communities President Don Whyte met with
district officials to alleviate morning and afternoon traffic
problems generated in front of Bevis Elementary. The school
is directly across from the community Welcome Center and the
congestion makes for a dangerous crossing. To fix the problem,
Whyte agreed to implement and pay for several changes including
a stop line from the Welcome Center and 'no left turn' sign
out of the Welcome Center during school drop off and pick
up hours.
In addition, Bevis will now have four crossing
guards. The Sheriff's Office currently has deputies working
the crossings until more crossing guards are hired.
Guards work part time for the Sheriff's Office. The pay is
$8.66 an hour.
Applicants must go to the Sheriff's Operations
Center at 2008 E. Eighth Ave. to apply. Call 247-8123 for
details.
