The Walgreens store currently located at the southeast corner of U.S. Hwy. 301 and Boyette Rd. will be moving across the street early next year when construction is complete on a new, larger store. Walgreens move could be an indication of things to come for the plaza, which has seen other closings since access was limited due to the widening of Boyette Rd.
According to Carol Hively, corporate spokesman for Walgreens, the move is part of a nation-wide trend of moving older stores to better locations with more space.
"We are relocating a number of stores to stand-alone buildings giving them more room for drive-thru pharmacies," says Hively. "Additionally, we are always looking at ways to make our location more convenient for our customers."
Walgreens is a national chain, with more than 4,000 stores around the country.
The original location was built in 1992 and does not have a drive-thru pharmacy. Hively expects the new store to open in April and states that in most cases of store relocation, the old store will close one evening and the new one will open the next morning.
"We like to make it as convenient as possible for our pharmacy customers," she explains.
The new store, currently under construction on the northwest corner of U.S. Hwy. 301 and Gibsonton Dr. will be 14,800 sq. ft. and although the current employees will move to the new store, there will be more opportunities for employment as the new location will have increased hours of operation.
