Annual Trick or Treat Street Expects Record Crowd

By Sharon Still

Whether it’s Sponge Bob, Willy Wonka or Harry Potter, a princess, a witch or one of the Care Bears, it's that time again to find the perfect costume for Halloween and a safe place to take your kids.

Every year, the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office puts together a safe and fun environment for children of all ages to share in the tradition of trick or treating. This year will be no exception.

"Last year, the event was bigger and better than ever and we handed out treats to an estimated 6,000 guests," says event chairperson Susan Shute, also a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Deputy.

This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, October 29, from 4-9 p.m. at Riverview High School, located at 11311 Boyette Rd.

Businesses set up facades around the Riverview High School parking lot and hand out candy while clowns stroll around. There are also rides, food and lots of fun for the whole family.

Costume contests will be held throughout the evening, starting at 6 p.m. for babies to three-year-old children. Four to seven year olds will be judged at 6:45 p.m., followed by children ages 8-11 at 7:30 p.m. and those 12 and older at 8:15 p.m. Contest registration is free prior to the event and $2 at the entry gate.

Salon of Summerfield owner and former honorary mayor Patti Greene served as a judge for the event last year and says, "I had a blast. There were so many great costumes that it was tough to pick winners. Everyone deserved to be a winner."

Sponsorships and donations are always welcome and proceeds will benefit local clubs and organizations.

Admission is free. For further details, call 643-8000.
