When 7-year-old Zach Bonner has an idea, people benefit. This service-minded child decided he wanted to help hurricane victims by coordinating with his Cub Scout Pack #604 to provide supplies and toys for the children in Louisiana and Mississippi, some of whom are in shelters without books, toys or school supplies.
Bonner started his mission by distributing approximately 700 flyers to neighbors, who donated enough items to help him fill half his parents' garage. The Cub Scouts are stepping in to help fill the other half. Lexington Homes has also agreed to pitch in by putting collection boxes in its model homes in the area.
Zach's mom, Laurie, is again amazed at her child's determination to help others and the support of the Cub Scouts and the community. She plans on renting a U-Haul this month and as a family, personally transporting the items to victims.
"I want to make sure it goes directly to the kids and not sit in a warehouse somewhere," she said.
Zach, who has performed many service projects for others including collecting monetary donations for Hurricane Charley victims, hopes to make a difference in the lives of the children. "I'm looking forward to taking the stuff and meeting some of the kids," said Zach.
Items that are being collected include activity books, school supplies, board games, card games, balls and sports equipment, arts and crafts supplies, puzzles, CD players and CDs, books, hygiene items and Ziploc bags.
