The McCabe Theater, located at 506 5th St. in Valrico, is rich in history but in need of repair.
The structure, commissioned as one of three buildings to be constructed from The Valrico Brickyard's unique white brick, is a two-story building that opened its doors in December 1915 as The Valrico Civic Center.
Purchased by The Village Players, a non-profit organization that produces community theater and also provides acting lessons for children, the building was renamed The James McCabe Theater after its longtime artistic director.
President of The Village Players, Gail Pierce is concerned about the building and says it is in need of repairs, and the group of volunteers does not have the money to make them. "We are teaching children theater here and entertaining the community," she said.
She said volunteers are needed with skills in tree trimming, drywall, painting and roofing. Estimates on a new roof have run a minimum of $10,000.
The most pressing need is for tree trimmers; a large mulberry tree's roots are trying to grow under the structure's foundation.
Because of its designation as a historical site, attention must be paid to maintaining the original architectural design of the building.
"If you want to help restore this building come watch a show, donate money or put an ad in our program," said Pierce.
"This building is a living thing," she adds. "If you don't have money but you have a skill, call me."
