Bloomindale/Fishhawk Edition

Jaymer-Que Will Feature Live Cooking

Bloomingdale East residents Jaymer and Cyndi Holcombe are scheduled to open Jaymer-Que Southern BBQ in the Albertson's-anchored shopping center on the northeast corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Lithia Pinecrest Rd. (in the spot formerly occupied by Quizno's) in early December.

Menu items will include all the traditional barbecue favorites such as pulled pork, beef brisket, spare ribs and smoked chicken, plus homemade sausage, baked barbecue beans, cole slaw and mashed potatoes, in addition to corn, broccoli, potato salad, sweet tea and other goodies.

Jaymer says he has a special love for barbecue. "On January 9, 2005, I declared that 2005 was going to be the year that I kicked it up a notch in BBQ,'" he explains.

He thought this meant taking part in some competitions, but instead he found himself planning for a new restaurant.

One great aspect at Jaymer-Que will be what Jaymer refers to as "Patio-Que," live cooking on Saturday nights of off-the-menu items on the 700-sq.-ft. outdoor patio. Choices could include custom-cooked ribeyes and NY strip steaks, shrimp, pork chops or other grilled foods that will be prepared on state-of-the-art ceramic cookers that seal in the flavor and moisture.

"I cook food like I'd like to have it cooked for me somewhere," Jaymer comments.

Jaymer-Que also will offer food sealed in vacuum-sealed bags for easy-to-make meals at home.

Store hours are tentatively set for 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Monday-Saturday. For further details, call 657-4227 or visit www.jaymerque.com.

Edible Arrangements

Running out of great gift ideas? A new store is scheduled to open in the River Hills plaza in early 2006 that can help you solve that problem. It's Edible Arrangements.

Edible Arrangements are a great alternative to flowers and something the men will love too. Bouquets feature combinations of fruits, including pineapple, strawberries, grapes, honeydew melon and cantaloupe, carved into beautiful shapes such as pineapple daisies and hearts.

"I am always looking for unique gifts to send people and with everyone so health conscious today, it's a great gift to send and also receive," says Cathy Seal, who co-owns the franchise with her brother, Stephen Buscarino.

Options include a chocolate-covered strawberry bouquet, sports-themed bouquets and bouquets that use a child's coin bank as a holder for the fruit flowers. The keepsakes allow the gift to last longer than it takes to eat the delicious fruit.

It's great for thank you gifts, parties, weddings, baby showers, corporate events, sympathy and much more, Seal suggests.

Orders can be placed by phone or on the Internet and are available for pick-up or delivery.

The website (www.ediablearrangements.com) shows photos of the creations and all of the different price ranges available.

Seal, who lives nearby, says she is excited about this concept and thinks her neighbors will love it too, explaining that she chose the location because it's close to her home and adds, "I wanted to do business within my community. I think you receive more personalized customer service with local business."

Buscarino, who will move from New York to FishHawk early next year when the store opens, and Seal each have more than 30 years of customer service experience in various fields. "We want to get to know our customers by name," says Seal.

Edible Arrangement will be located at 4361 Lynx Paw Tr. in the River Hills Plaza. Store hours are set for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. For further details, visit the website at www.ediblearrangements.com and go to store locator to find contact information or send an email.

New St. Stephen Pastor Settles In

By Lauren Curts

There has been a match made in heaven between the new Pastor, Father Bill Swengros and St. Stephen Catholic Church. Swengros joined on as the Pastor on July 1 and since then church activity has taken off.

"This community is full of wonderful, warm and generous people," states Swengros.

But to say they don't have a unique and talented leader would be a great injustice.

Swengros was born and raised in upstate New York. After his parents moved to Florida in 1977, he learned about balmy winters and steamy summers in Key Largo, teaching music education to high school students. He then continued his education in Tallahassee in music performance. It was there that he received his calling from God.

Swengros soon found himself in the seminary studying philosophy and theology. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1991 and was sent to St. Paul's Catholic Church in Tampa. From there, more education was asked of him by the bishop, so he continued seeking a dual degree from the University of Ottawa and St. Paul University in Canada. This was quite a change from those balmy winters.

At that point, Swengros' career took a different direction. He became active with the Tribunal, counseling divorcees through tough times.

"It was like the elephant in the room that no one talked about, so I talked about it," he states. From there he began to focus his efforts on working with soon-to-be married couples through the National Board for Engaged Encounter. This is a weekend retreat for engaged couples, assisting and shaping them in the roles they will play in the future. "Marriage is a very important sacrament in the Catholic faith. You will never be unmarried again," he states.

It was then that Swengros was asked to again continue his education, completing his doctorate degree in Rome. For the jubilee year of 2000, Swengros completed his dissertation, Making Invalid Marriages Valid. Thinking this was the path the Lord wanted him to follow, he figured he would work in marriage counseling for the remainder of his career.

After four years as the Pastor at Most Holy Name in Gulfport, he was moved to one of the largest parishes in the diocese, St. Stephen Catholic Church in Valrico.

Knee-deep into his work at St. Stephen, Swengros feels he is finding his way. Community involvement for charity has taken a large role in the church. More than $50,000 was initially donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, as well as ongoing food and clothing drives.

"Over a weekend, the members of St. Stephen donated enough to fill an 18 wheeler," he happily states. Currently, they are working with a church that was destroyed in the Biloxi area, Our Mother of Sorrows. Thirteen thousand dollars has already been donated to the destroyed church.

As for the future, it looks as bright as ever at St. Stephen. Swengros plans on continuing the good work his predecessor Father Pat began, as well as working hard to make St. Stephen a success in the future. With his motto "Growing Together in Christ," Swengros feels St. Stephen is on the cutting edge of future planning. "We are in strategic planning for 10 and 20+ years into the future," he states. Part of that plan includes a new design and location for the church on Boyette Rd.

Swengros is an extraordinary man and leader, and the people of St. Stephen have embraced him, but this is nothing compared to the appreciation he feels towards his Parrish. "The attitude I have is one of pure gratitude. I have felt so welcomed here," he states. St. Stephen and Father Bill Swengros look like a winning combination that will continue growing together in Christ for many years to come.

For more information on St. Stephen Catholic Church or Father Bill Swengros, call 689-4900.

Chamber Announces Business Awards

By Kathy Dotson

Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce members, business nominees and their families attended the 25th annual Small Business of the Year Award Gala at the Crowne Plaza Tampa East last month where the Chamber announced its 2005 winners.

Taking the honors for the home-based business category was Jana Broder, owner of Drum Magic, an African hand drumming class, first introduced in the Brandon areas as an after school class and now can be found in senior centers, YMCA's and public and private schools.

Tracy Halfman was the winner of the small business with one to five employees category. Halfman, owner of DrugScreen Solutions, was first known as a home-based distribution center of on-site drug testing equipment and supplies that led to offering their services to area employers. The company then contracted with IdentiGene Laboratories and with United States Drug Testing Laboratories to provide hair testing and DNA paternity testing. Halfman's company was the first in the nation to be awarded exclusive rights to distribute and market the Drink Detective, a drink spiking drug detection kit.

Winner of the six to fifteen employees category was Michael Wick, president of Serenity Meadows Memorial Park Funeral Home and Crematory. Serenity Meadows is recognized as the only funeral service provider in Eastern Hillsborough County that provides funerals, cremations, burials, entombments and cremation scattering on site.

And Heather Ochalek, owner of Music Showcase, felt an overwhelming feeling of amazement when she learned she was the winner of the 16-plus employees category since she had recently been honored as the Chamber's best minority or woman-owned business at its Diversity Awareness Luncheon.

"I was extremely honored to win in both those categories, especially since the candidates in my categories were exceptional," said Ochalek, who has managed the family-owned music store for the past ten years with her husband, Andy.

"Winning the small business of the year award was a win for the whole store and it was a way to show my employees that they're doing a great job. Winning the other award showed that I can balance the best of both worlds by raising a family and having my own business."

Music Showcase offers a full range of sales, rentals, repairs, lesson and music programs. They also have 20 private lesson studios, a professionally installed stage, lighting and sound system.

The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce recognizes small business owners for their contribution to the local community. Volunteers from the nonprofit group, SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives, selected this year's winners.

Flood Zone Meetings Postponed

Staff Report

Important changes are occurring in Hillsborough County. A multi-year project to re-examine flood zones and develop detailed digital flood hazard maps is nearing completion. Water flow and drainage patterns have changed significantly in the 25 years since the first Flood Hazard Maps were produced in Hillsborough County. These changes are related to erosion, land use, and other natural forces. However, the county's existing Flood Hazard Maps have not kept up with these changes and therefore don't reflect the County's current flood risks.

In response to this need, the County and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in cooperation with the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace and Plant City and various community partners, have revised the Flood Hazard Maps (also known as Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps). The new maps are preliminary maps and will not affect insurance costs or requirements until after a period of public review has occurred and the county has officially adopted them - anticipated to occur in fall 2006. These updated digital flood maps will allow property owners to make better financial decisions about protecting themselves and their property. The maps also will help community officials, engineers, builders and others to make important determinations about where and how new structures and developments should be built. As a result, Hillsborough County will be a safer place to live.

The county is currently reviewing and refining the property data that the new flood maps are based on, in order to ensure that residents have the best information about their flood risk. As a result, the notification letters that were going to be sent out to affected property owners, the public meetings and library open houses have been pushed back several weeks. Please check periodically on this website for more information on when these events will be rescheduled. You also can call the Hillsborough County Citizen Action Center at 272-5900.

Manatees Warm Up at Power Plant

By Michelle Caceres

It's the warm waters near TECO's Big Bend Power Station in Apollo Beach that beckon manatees each year. The marine mammals gather there, sometimes by the hundreds, when the bay temperature drops below 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Manatee Viewing Center kicked off its twentieth year on November 1 with new attractions, including the South Shore Café refreshment area, the learning center and expanded and new observation areas for viewing the center's vibrant plant and bird life.

TECO spokesman Ross Bannister says the center is a terrific free family experience. "Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy your meal under the picnic pavilion," he said. If packing lunch is too much effort, Bannister suggests stopping by the South Shore Café for hot dogs, chili, hot sandwiches, pretzels, nachos and soft drinks. Coffee and hot chocolate are available to warm up visitors on cold days.

Apollo Beach residents James Decker and Jordan Krause try to visit the center at least once a year. Decker was a little disappointed on his most recent visit because the weather was warm and he only saw a few manatees. He enjoys watching the fleshy mammals move slowly in the water, coming up for air sporadically. "It's cool they can go under water for a long time," he said.

A special twentieth anniversary celebration will take place on January 13 and 14 featuring Radio Disney, displays of native aquatic and avian creatures, activities for children and of course plenty of manatees.

The Manatee Viewing Center is open November 1-April 15 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Reservations, which are required for groups of 15 or more, can be made online or by calling 228-4289. To get there take I-75 south to Exit #246, then go west on Big Bend Rd. two and a half miles. The entrance is on the right.

For more information, visit www.tampaelectric.com or call 228-4289.

Riverview Elementary Fall Festival

By Lynn Parejko

Amidst the sounds of children's happy voices, the Riverview Elementary school PTA was raising money, good money, at its annual Fall Festival held November 18-19 at the Riverview High School campus on Boyette Rd.

This is the second year that the festival has been held at the high school, as there is more space for larger rides and the location is more visible.

Sheila King, the Riverview elementary PTA president, states that the 2005 fall festival event was a huge success. "We would like to thank everyone that came out to support our event including all of the wonderful vendors who generously donated so much to make the event a huge success."

The festival, which included games, thrilling rides for children of all ages, arts and crafts, gift baskets, live music and delicious food offered free admission and people turned out in droves to help support the PTA. Riverview Elementary School teachers had gift baskets for sale, with proceeds to benefit individual classrooms.

New Riverview residents Shawn and Kelly Wiley stated that they attended the event hoping to get an idea of what their new community was like. "We are more than pleased," stated Kelly. "Riverview seems to be a get-involved community and we're happy to be here, plus, you can't beat the weather." The Wileys are recent transplants from Vermont.

Riverview Elementary School was established in 1961 and is located at 10809 Hannaway Dr. in Riverview. The school can be reached at 671-5105.

GOOD NEWS…JESUS IS ALIVE IN RIVERVIEW

Riverview U.M. Church has news for everyone. The church’s contemporary services are alive. Yes, alive with the Spirit. The church has Praise Band, under the direction of Danette Garcia, playing gospel music that sets toes to tapping and bodies to swinging with the sheer joy of singing the Lord's praises with gusto. There also will is a dance group called "Praise in Motion" that gives school age children the chance to express their love of the Lord and all His stories they learn in Sunday school. The dances are choreographed by Diana Williams with the help of senior high youth, working with the group Sunday evenings. Their frequent performances are delightful occasions.

There also is a signing group led by Linda Bauer. She works with the mentally challenged members, teaching them how to sign for gospel songs and hymns. The group, called "The De'Signers," is a source of pride and accomplishment for both the members and all who are privileged to see them.

The "Children's Moment" is presented by Margie Phillips, who gathers all the children present into a group around her. She shares delightful stories about scriptural characters and animals she weaves into guidance for them in how they live. After leading a brief prayer for everyone to repeat, she gives each child little mementos of the stories, along with a treat to eat. Everyone loves Miss Margie's "Moments." Following this, the children are invited to attend special children's church services with Karen Ferreira and Leanne Huff or Jan Hodel.

The messages by Pastor Tom Bridges are filled with hope and inspiration, bringing the Lord to daily living in a way that makes anything seem possible by following the Lord's teachings. Jesus becomes real as we share thoughts and ideas suitable for today's needs.

Contemporary services are under the leadership of Wally Gold, a talented singer and dedicated speaker for modern Christian living. Everyone is invited to come, participate, be moved and uplifted by joining in on Sunday mornings at 8:30 in Riverview U.M. Church's Crichton Hall. It's an hour to invigorate the soul.

Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate CARES Raises Nearly $3,000 for Local Charities

Julie Wright, an event organizer and sales associate says, "We were happy to see so many people in the community who were ready for a fun and safe evening with their children." Approximately 600 guests attended the Haunted House and the children's fun Fall Festival area in the 7,500-sq. ft. office. The children enjoyed face painting, costume contests and fishing for treats. The highlight of the evening was a guest appearance by the Tampa Bay's Devil Rays Baseball team's mascot "Raymond" who attracted large crowds of children.

Making a special "ghost" appearance, were Jeffrey Corbin, Managing Broker of Brandon's office and sales associate Jeff Doty dressed as the ghosts of Colbert Coldwell and Benjamin Banker, the founders of Coldwell Banker Real Estate. "The event was a fabulous way to involve the community, as teens from the local high schools worked with us and earned community service hours. We look forward to having the Halloween Spooktacular again next year," said Corbin.

The prizes were drawn from the raffle tickets sold and included four rounds of golf for four people donated by The River Hills Country Club, a six month membership to Shapes Total Fitness for Women, a $50 gift card to Chili's donated by Coldwell Banker Mortgage and a $50 gift certificate to Target donated by Sunbelt Title.
