Four-year-old Taylor McMullen sits quietly with her mother, Fran, who fills out the required paperwork so Taylor can officially be registered as a kindergarten student at Pinecrest Elementary for the 2006/07 school year.
The McMullens moved to Keysville last August, intentionally buying a home within Pinecrest's school boundaries. "I like the rural setting and the teachers and administration here are great," she said.
Pinecrest principal Vicki Dotson said the countdown, formerly called the roundup, is held earlier than normal this year. "We want to give parents who are interested in school choice the opportunity to come and visit our school," she said. She is also trying to inform parents about the summer voluntary pre-k program that will be offered at the school.
Dotson said Pinecrest has seven kindergarten classrooms this year but projections for the next school year are hard to make. "Kindergarten is the one grade level where you never really know how many kids you're going to get until they show up," she said.
At each countdown parents can expect to learn about the curriculum and the Florida School Readiness Uniform Screening System (SRUSS), the lunch program, plus a tour the classrooms. Parents with all enrollment items will be able to register their child that day.
Children must be five years of age on or before September 1, 2006 to register. In addition, children must have the following: a valid birth certificate, proof of residence, a health report that includes an examination performed by a medical practitioner within one year prior to enrollment and proper immunizations.
Upcoming countdowns include Bevis and FishHawk Creek elementaries on March 2, Bevis at 5:30 and FishHawk Creek at 5:45 p.m., Boyette Springs on March 15 at 9 a.m., Valrico Elementary on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. and Riverview Elementary on April 5 at 8:30 a.m.
