Some familiar faces are taking on important roles at the area’s new schools. The Hillsborough County School Board appointed principals for three new schools at a meeting in January and since then, veteran principals from Brandon High School and East Bay High School have left to take over new positions at Lennard High in Ruskin and Spoto High in Riverview respectively.
Both schools are scheduled to open in August for the 2006-2007 school year.
Denny Oest, principal at one of Hillsborough's County's oldest schools, Brandon High, since February 2003 has taken over the lead position at brand new Lennard High. Oest states, "It's an exciting time and a great opportunity to be able to start a school from the ground up."
Oest began his career with Hillsborough County in 1985 in a teaching position at McLane Middle. Additionally, he has taught at Burns and Eisenhower middle schools and later held assistant principal posts at Buchanan and Turkey Creek middle schools and Durant and Wharton high schools.
Clyde Trathowen, principal at East Bay since February 2004, will take over the position at Spoto High. Trathowen states, "Opening a new school is a lot of work, but the opportunity to start from scratch and build a team is exciting."
Trathowen began his career in 1988 as a teacher at Bloomingdale High School. He served as assistant principal at Stewart Middle School in Tampa and Memorial Middle School, also in Tampa, before being promoted to principal of East Bay. Both men began their new positions last month.
Former assistant principal Sharon Morris has taken over the principal spot at East Bay after more than 20 years at the school.
Lennard and Spoto are among three new schools opening in east Hillsborough County in August. The other is Inez Doby Elementary School in Gibsonton's Covington Park subdivision.
The school board selected Catherine Ferguson, who has served as principal at McDonald Elementary School in Seffner for the past six years, to lead Doby. Ferguson will begin her appointment in mid-March.
