Pirates Invade Nativity Fundraiser

By Kathy Dotson

The Nativity Catholic School auction committee is promoting the Auction & Gala 2006 as the "ultimate pirate event." It will be held on Saturday, April 29, 6:30 p.m., at Raymond James Stadium. This year’s theme, "A Pirate's Life - Treasure the Past, Set Sail for Their Future" will have guests gnarling and growling with their fellow mate's to try to outbid each other on numerous auction items.

The evening will include a treasure hunt dinner, dancing and a live and silent auction. Tickets are now available for a donation of $75 each. Development director Tina Sullivan said the event has become an important piece of the financial puzzle for Nativity Catholic School.

"Every dollar raised at the auction goes to all our students and helps keep tuition affordable for all families," said Sullivan. "All enhancements are directly related to the academic, arts, technology, athletics and tuitions assistance programs."

This year’s auction items will include Buccaneer, Lightning and Devil Rays tickets, sports memorabilia, golf and vacation packages and merchandise, gift certificates from the Brandon and Tampa-area restaurants and stores and the ever-popular Principal for the Day and Family Name Street Sign.

"Last year we were able to raise $98,000 and we were just thrilled with that," said Melissa Massaro, auction committee chairperson who shares responsibilities with Sheri Slowey, Karen Heitzmann and Lisa Montero. "This year, we will work hard to raise more than $100,000 with the help of the community who has been so generous to us over the years."

Last years auction proceeds helped the school purchase classroom carpeting, resurface the exterior floor and hallways, add projection Interwrite handheld smart pad systems to six grade levels, new vertical blinds and numerous enhancements to the computer technology lab.

The annual auction event has also had an unexpected benefit in addition to its fundraising opportunities, Sullivan said, it gives everyone a chance to have a fun evening for a great cause, our kids.

The Carapella Family were the high bidders for the Family Name Street Sign at the Auction & Gala 2005. School principal, Dr. Bernadette Kunnen said money raised at the auction impacts more than 750 students. Everything we do is about our kids, said Kunnen.
