Brandon Area Father of the Year Nominations

The Presidents' Roundtable is seeking nominations for the Father of the Year 2006. The contest is approved by the Hillsborough County School Board and is sponsored by the Presidents' Roundtable Charities of Brandon. Nominated fathers must reside in the greater Brandon area and be available to participate in the Fourth of July parade, sponsored by the Roundtable. Students in grades first through fifth are eligible to submit entries.

Students must hand write an essay in 50 words or less telling why their dad should be the "Brandon Area Father of the Year." Entries may include a drawing and must include child's first and last name, age, school, grade level, home telephone number, address and the father's name.

The winning father and child will ride as honored guests in the parade on July 4. The father will receive a 3 month membership to the Campo Family YMCA, a free round of golf for four, a family portrait, dinner for four, a "2006 Father of the Year" shirt, four tickets to the Florida Aquarium, a 13 week subscription to the Tampa edition of the St. Peters burg Times and a framed copy of the entry.

Entries will be judged by volunteers from local newspapers. All entries must be mailed to The Presidents' Roundtable, PO Box 1061, Brandon, FL 33509 and postmarked by June 2.

The Presidents' Roundtable is a non-profit organization formed by presidents and interested parties of non-profit community groups and clubs working to benefit the greater Brandon area. In addition to the Fourth of July parade, the organization is known for producing the local Honorary Mayor's Race as well as the annual Public Affairs Dinner.

 

Golf Fundraiser at Bloomingdale

On Saturday, June 24, the Ye Mystic Krewe of the Nautilus is hosting a golf tournament at Bloomingdale Golfer's Club to benefit the Florida Aquarium's youth programs.

Regristation will take place at 7 a.m. and the day's fun will include lunch, free beer, door prizes, putting challenges, longest drive, closest to the pin and a hole-in-one contest with a $100,000 prize.

BSTD Host Tax Collector

The Bloomingdale Special Taxing District (BSTD) will meet Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m. and special guest speaker tax collector Doug Belden will discuss the possibility of opening a 10,000-15,000 sq. ft. tax office on land behind the Bloomingdale library.

The meeting is open to the public and all residents are encouraged to attend.

 

Library Screens Film

"The Day of Creation: Man's Place in the Universe," a short film on ideas taught by Gurdjieff and Ouspensky will be screened at the Bloomingdale Regional Library on Sunday June 25 at 2 p.m.

Vision Expo in Ruskin

Come see what all the excitement is about at the Ruskin United Methodist Church as Helping Hands, Helping Hearts hosts the Vision Expo Insight for Sight Festival for all ages Saturday, June 3 from 10-3 p.m.

Free food and beverages will be served as well as raffles for a TV, DVD and much more.

There will also be creative stations and games for children as well as services concerning vision available for visitors. According to organizers, the purpose of the event is to make sure that people of all ages realize the importance of eye testing.

Ruskin United Methodist Church is located at 105 4th Ave, NW Ruskin.

To reach the church, take U.S. Hwy. 41 South to Shell Point Rd. Make a right at the stoplight and then make another right on 1st Street. The church is located one block ahead on the left.

 

Edward Jones Hosts Grand Opening

The FishHawk office of Edward Jones hosted a grand opening celebration last month. Approximately three hundred residents attended the event held at FishHawk's Park Square hosted by Elijah Heath, the investment representative for the office, who provided delicious food and plenty of entertainment: DJ, Bouncy Castle, face painting, balloon artist, and carnival games.

In addition, Heath is hosting a free broadcast presentation titled "Making Sense of International Investing" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, at the new office ( FishHawk Ranch Park Square, Suite 201).

During this one-hour interactive program, participants will find out how to diversify their assets, take advantage of growth beyond U.S. borders and navigate the risks inherent to international investing, such as currency fluctuations and political and economic events.

Fine Arts League Announces Winners

The Brandon League of Fine Arts has announced the winners of its 2006 Fine Arts Scholarship Awards. Its corporate partner PMSI-Tmesys, an east Tampa-based company that provides prescriptions and other pharmaceutical supplies for workers' compensation patients, funded the nearly $3,000 scholarship program.

The winners received scholarships to the colleges of their choices. The 2006 winners are: Jaclyn Johnson from Bloomingdale High School who received a $1,000 scholarship; Tracy Allen, also from Bloomingdale High, who received a $950 scholarship; and Sarah Alexandra Miller from Riverview High School, who received a $900 scholarship.

Institute Hosts Speaker

Brandon Hospital Donates Easter Baskets

The Diagnostic Imaging Department staff at Brandon Regional Hospital donated more than two-dozen baskets to the children on hospital's pediatric service, according to Gary Litvin, director of Diagnostic Imaging.

Staff members created one-of-a-kind baskets and filled them with toys and treats. Employees winning awards in the basket competition included Bridgette Hurley, ultrasound service, for Most Creative basket and Brenda Bailey, radiology nurse, for Most Original. Also winning was Jennifer Kepics of Xray for Most Traditional.

"This one of many teambuilding activities the department has undertaken over the last several months that benefits both our department and our community," explained Litvin. "Patient care involves extensive team work and it is fun to learn more about each other and our strengths."

Summer Arts Camp

Summer Arts camp will be held throughout June and July at The Joshua Center for Arts. Registrations are still being accepted for the following camps:

Radiate Camp (June 19-24, from 8- 4 p.m.) is open to students ages 6-17. Camp will incorporate all areas of performance (Dance, drama, art, voice, gymnastics, technical & production and the marketing of production.) A trip to Disney is included during one day of the camp. Students will be performing what they have learned on Saturday evening at FishHawk Ranch's Park Square. Cost $225.

Preschool Arts Camp (June 12-16, from 10-12 p.m.) is open to children 3-6. Campers will participate in dance and art classes. The cost of the camp includes complete dance attire. Performance on Friday. Cost $135.

Junior Arts Camp (June12-16, from 1-4 p.m.) is open to students ages 7-12. Camp will include dance and art classes for beginning students or those with less than two years of dance training. Cost of camp includes complete dance attire. Cost $175.

Ballet Camp Two camps will be offered. Level I/II will be a one week camp held June 26-30, from 10-3 p.m. Level III/IV/V camp will be two weeks from July 10-21. Camps will focus on technique, pointe, repertoire and body conditioning. Level I/II camp is $200 and Level III/IV/V camp is $400.

Summer classes will also be offered at The Joshua Center for the Arts during June and July.

DAR Members Have Busy Schedule

Members of the John Donaldson, Jr. Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists have had a busy Spring. The May 2 meeting was attended by State Regent, Nancy Flint whose Regent's project is Support the Troops. She administrated the oath of office for chapter officers 2006-2008. Roberta Jordan of Brandon will remain the Regent for two more years.

Members have presented JROTC medals to six high schools in this area. They are: Cadet William Shelnutt, Newsome High by Roberta Jordan, C/LT Sondra Alligood, Armwood High by Noreta Wells, Cadet Connie Weaver, Durant High by Mary Gates, Cadet Liz Rojek, Bloomingdale High by Betty Chapman, Cadet Sarah Barnett, Brandon High by Noreta Wells and Cadet Kristina Lockhart, Riverview High by Robert Jordan.

The group’s National Motto is Past, Present, Future. It is a pleasure to honor the Cadets for their patriotism and dedication to our country.

St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Ruskin "Reaches Out"

The Women of St. John the Divine presented a check for $1,250 to Pastor Bill Cruz of The Good Samaritan Mission in Wimauma, along with food items, to assist the ministry in feeding the poor and in support of the church's dedication in educating and attending to the youth and little children in a Christian caring environment for working parents.

Community Block Party

South Shore United Methodist Church will be hosting a Community Block Party on Friday, June 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Vance Vogel Park, East Bay Little League Complex Soccer Field, 13010 Bullfrog Creek Rd. in Gibsonton.

The block party is free to all who attend.

South Shore United Methodist a new church in Apollo Beach currently worshipping on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at Apollo Beach Elementary School with an emphasis on community involvement and meeting the needs of the people of South Shore.

Participants at the block party will include many county agencies such as, Hillsborough County Fire Department, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department, Emergency Management, Solid Waste, Aging Services, Ruskin Neighborhood Services, Voter Registration and Voting Booth demonstrations, South Bay Hospital, Mary Martha House, CARE and more.

The purpose of the event is to have fun, food, games and bring information to the South Shore community.

Checks are to be made payable to Sun City Center United Methodist Church as the sponsor of this new church start. Please indicate that funds are for South Shore UMC Block Party.

St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 705 Ninth St. Ruskin, offers the following:

Sundays, Traditional Worship services at 7:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m. with choir. Contemporary family services with band at 9 a.m. All offer Holy Communion.

During the 9 a.m. service, there is also a children's church based on the format of vacation Bible school, with lessons taught through stories music and skits. parents have the option of having their elementary school-age youth attend children's church or go into the sanctuary as a family. Children may be dropped off as early as 8:45 a.m., but must be registered by an adult the first time they attend. Nursery takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Immanuel Lutheran Church Offers Bible School

Enrollment is underway for the Immanuel Lutheran Church's 'Discover the Riches of Christ' vacation bible school. The school offers students the chance to go on a week-long treasure hunt from June 12-16.

The school is available to children age three through those entering sixth grade. The program runs from 9 a.m.-12 Noon, Monday through Friday. There will be a Friday family night closing celebration from 6-8 p.m. including a light dinner.

FALL 2006 SOCCER REGISTRATIONS

Registrations for the fall 2006 season of Valrico Soccer Club's recreational soccer program will be held the following dates and times:

June 15, 6-8 p.m. and June 17, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Red Clubhouse at the Valrico Fields and June 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. under Awning at the Valrico Fields.

Players between the ages of four and 14 are eligible to play in the program. The fall season will begin with practices beginning during the middle of August and games are scheduled to begin on September 9 and will end on November 11. The cost is $75 per player and includes game uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), registration with Florida Youth Soccer Association, referee fees and end of season trophy.

BNI Starts New Chapter

BNI, Business Network International, a networking organization specializing in the exchange of qualified business referrals among members, is opening a new chapter in Valrico.

Business professionals are invited to attend a Kick-Off breakfast meeting on June 14 at The Elks Lodge, 800 Centennial Lodge Dr. in Brandon from 7:30-9 a.m.

"The Kick Off is an opportunity to see and learn the secrets of how businesses thrive on word of mouth or referral based marketing," says Tom Fleming, executive director for the organization.

Summer Cinema Series

Unity in Brandon presents a summer Spiritual Cinema series which will feature four inspirational and enlightening films. The first film entitled, "The Secret" will be held on Friday, June 16.

The second film to be shown on Friday, June 30, will be "Mother Ghost.” Films in July include "The Healer" and "An Angel for Mary" on July 14 and July 28 respectively.

Chick-fil-A Announces Scholarship

Chick-fil-A Inc. announced recently that Valrico resident Megan Moore has been awarded the $1,000 Leadership Scholarship, bringing the total amount of team member scholarships awarded to over $21 million.

Megan Moore was nominated by Paul Holmberg, operator of Chick-fil-A of Lake Brandon Village. The Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship program provides assistance to restaurant employees who want to further their education. "The program recognizes employees who have acquired the leadership qualities and skills necessary to be successful in life while providing an additional incentive for our employees to remain dedicated and work hard," says Holmberg. In addition, Moore will be eligible for Chick-fil-A's S. Truett Cathy Scholar Award which provides additional $1,000 scholarships to the top 25 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship recipients each year.

Greater Brandon BPW is proud to announce that it will be awarding career advancement scholarships to two deserving women for $500 each at its May 11 meeting. FALL 2006 SOCCER REGISTRATIONS

Registrations for the fall 2006 season of Valrico Soccer Club's recreational soccer program will be held the following dates and times:

June 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. under Awning at the Valrico Fields.

Players between the ages of four and 14 are eligible to play in the program. The fall season will begin with practices beginning during the middle of August and games are scheduled to begin on September 9 and will end on November 11. The cost is $75 per player and includes game uniform (shirt, shorts and socks), registration with Florida Youth Soccer Association, referee fees and end of season trophy.
