Taxing District Targets Vandalism

By Lisa Lambson

As the rate of vandalism increases, the Bloomingdale Special Taxing District (BSTD) discussed the need to make this issue a top priority at its June meeting.

According to BSTD project manager Al Devney, both graffiti and property damage caused by vandalism and unreported accidents are increasing in the Bloomingdale communities. The graffiti is an ongoing problem that leaders are forced to deal with on a daily basis.

Board president Thom Snelling stated, "No matter what else happens, graffiti must be covered within 24-hours for our residents. No exceptions can be allowed for this. It must be covered in some way within 24-hours."

In addition to the graffiti, there have been more incidents that are leaving property damaged with no one willing to take responsibility for it. A hit and run accident in June caused significant damage and although a resident reported the accident and the tag number for the person responsible, no action has been seen to make retribution.

The district offers a standing reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons responsible for vandalism or unreported accident damage. The witness to the June accident received a $500 reward for reporting it to the authorities and the damage has been repaired. But, the person responsible for the accident has not attempted to set up any type of payment arrangements with the BSTD. The board agreed that it is in the best interest of the Bloomingdale communities to follow up with any of these types of incidents to the full extent of the law, including filing law suits and going to court to receive retribution for the damage, the reward and any legal fees incurred.

In addition to discussing the vandalism issues and the upcoming budget vote, the board members discussed the open trustee position. If you are interested in this position, please contact the BSTD at the number below.

The BSTD meets on the second Monday of the month with the next meeting falling on August 14. These meetings are open to the public. You can contact the BSTD or the Bloomingdale Homeowners Association (HOA) for more information at 684-6667.
