Brandon Bagels Has Taste of New York
By Christina Johnson
For 17 years, Brandon Bagels and More never strayed from its New York roots. Unlike most stores that sell bagels, Brandon Bagels and More never freezes its food. The employees bake about 120 dozen fresh bagels daily.
The store opened in 1988 in Bloomingdale and three years later, it moved to its current location on Brandon Blvd.
Owner Rich Olinger and his wife took over the store two years ago and over the course of their ownership, they've made a lot of changes.
"We hope to actually have enough space in the future to be able to have seating," says Olinger, "but right now we're basically sticking with carryout. People come in to order, take it out. We do trays and we do catering as well for different businesses."
One of the biggest additions to Brandon Bagels and More is the new sandwiches with Boar's Head meat that were recently added to the menu.
"I had a sandwich so thick, I had to split it with my husband," says Denise Frissell a Valrico resident who has been coming there since her son, now 29, was a kid.
"You can't get this anywhere else," says Frissell.
In addition to the unique bagels and sandwiches, the Olingers started making other baked goods from scratch.
"One is a Russian tea biscuit, which is pastry dough filled with raspberry and raisins and cinnamon sugar," says Olinger. "We also do bagel dogs. We take a Hebrew national hot dog and wrap it in bagel dough."
The bagel dogs are then boiled and baked just like the rest of the bagels.
According to Olinger, Brandon Bagels and More is the only bagel shop in Brandon and Tampa that still makes New York-style bagels.
Brandon Bagels and More is located at 942 W. Brandon Blvd.
