This year's race for Riverview's Honorary Mayor is helping to bring a Boys and Girls Club to the area. Paul Northrop, one of the two contenders in the race, is raising money for the proposed 13,000 sq. ft. facility planned on 20-acres of Resurrection Catholic Church 6819 Krycul Ave. in Riverview.
During the Riverview Honorary Mayor's Race, candidates raise funds for the charity of their choice and the contestant who raises the most money becomes the mayor for a year. Half the proceeds raised go directly to the charity while the other will benefit the Riverview Chamber.
"I feel like the South Shore area needs a facility that gives our children a place to come that reinforces the positive values of our community and helps the children to develop into future leaders," states Northrop, an advertising executive for the Tampa Tribune and member of the Riverview Rotary Club.
The club's goal is to raise $2 million for the project. Besides Northrop's expectation of $10,000-$15,000 of funding through the community's contribution, the club will also obtain funds from the late Ray Campo Trust of $750,000 which will be used to match every dollar raised by the mayoral race.
"Our purpose is to enable young people who need us the most to develop the skills, attitudes and values so that they may become productive, responsible, caring citizens. Our goal is to serve 500 children per year," states Roy Opfer, president of the Boys and Girls Clubs.
Residents can come out and support Northrop as well as the Boys and Girls Club by attending Celebrity Karaoke on April 13, Friday, from 8:30-11:30 p.m. at Cherry's Summerfield. Tickets, which include food and drinks, are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Residents can also enter a drawing which will take place at the Riverview Chamber's Hog Roast on April 21, when the winner of the mayoral race will be announced. Tickets are $5 or five tickets for $20. The prize is a pair of earrings donated by Mary's Fine Jewelry.
Cherry's is located at 11375 Big Bend Rd. in Riverview. The Riverview Chamber of Commerce is located at 10520 Riverview Dr. in Riverview.
