Valrico residents, mark your calendars for Thursday, July 12 when Bell Shoals Baptist Church will host a fundraiser for fellow resident Sydney Sims, a 9-year-old battling cancer.
Diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in January of 2004, Sydney has fought an uphill battle against this life-threatening disease. After the cancer was thought to be totally eradicated from the 9-year-old's body, it came back in an especially vulnerable area-behind her heart. Some activity is also being noticed in her femur as well.
To help with the tremendous costs of traveling to New York for surgery, the family has decided to be proactive in their approach to paying for all these impending costs.
In an effort to thwart this disease, the family is asking the community to participate in a fundraiser to help provide funding to the child's endeavor.
The first benefit the family organized raised an amazing $10,000 with 200-400 residents supporting their cause.
"It was truly incredible and overwhelming to know that so many people care," states Michelle Sims, Sydney's mother. "This next fundraiser will be very relaxed and slow paced but lots of fun with a concert and great food from Cheddars."
From 5:30 p.m.-8 p.m., guests will enjoy a just-grilled BBQ meal provided by Cheddar's of Brandon while listening to the music of country singer Chad Brock, and the morning show DJ on WQYK.
There will also be the revving of engines as the Faith Riders put on a motorcycle show and a classic car show takes place. Sponsors of the event include Cheddars restaurant, the Brandon Foundation and Chad Brock.
Tickets can be purchased for $20 each at Cheddar’s and on the Sydney’s Website.
"It will be a casual atmosphere, summer BBQ to raise money for the Sydney Sims Family Fund," says the girl’s mother.
Bell Shoals Baptist Church is located at 2102 Bell Shoals Rd. in Brandon. For more information or to purchase tickets, please go to www.sydlets.com.
