Foundation Helps Connect Residents

By Carisa Biesecker

Osprey Observer Small Business of the Year

Brandon Foundation Angel Rob Silver of Dynamic Painting donated a deck for Brandon family the Mayhews.

Sometimes angels come in the human form. At least that is how the Mayhew family of Brandon perceives FishHawk resident Rob Silver, a Brandon Foundation Angel who recently built a new deck for the family.

The Mayhew's daughter Peyton has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia since July of 2006, causing the family some hard times. But thanks to the support of the Brandon Foundation and its Foundation Angel program, which encourages community members to support others by highlighting specific skills or services, Brandon area residents in troubled times can have a shoulder to lean on.

"The Brandon Foundation realizes that it's not always the medical bills that take over your life, sometimes it's just the little things that you can no longer cope with that seem to overwhelm you," says Peyton's mother Anissa.

After learning that the family's deck was in need of repair, Silver, a member of the Foundation along with his wife Sharon, for the past year decided to help.

Peyton and her siblings are now able to play again on the deck, which measures 50 ft. long and eight ft. wide and took three days to rebuild.

"I enjoyed every minute of it! It was a pleasure to get to know such a close family," says Silver. "You feel great that you have helped a family, knowing that they appreciate you; whether I'm building a deck, painting a house or landscaping, there's just no better feeling."

According to Anissa, Silver worked hard on the deck. "He acted selflessly to get this in place for us, we were just blown away by the quality of commitment he showed," says Anissa. "Pediatric cancer has been a dark journey we've had to travel and during this time we've been so blessed by God to have people come into our lives to shine light on us.  Rob has been one of these tremendously bright lights that has graced our life and left us knowing that when you ask for help, God provides. Our gratitude for his compassion and generosity is more than we could really express. We feel truly blessed for Rob, he definitely is an angel to us."

The Brandon Foundation currently has 60 "angels" who have helped more than 20 families in the Brandon area.

Executive Director Liz Brewer explains, "We build bridges in our community of people who need help and people who want to help."

Silver, who has been in the painting business for the past 25 years and co-owns Dynamic Painting, is proud of his new role in the community.

"I chose to become a foundation angel because I enjoy helping others; it's a perfect opportunity to give back to a great community," says Silver. "The Brandon area is blessed to have an organization like the Brandon Foundation."
