Residents Attend Downtown Open House

By John Ney

Approximately 80 residents from the Riverview area attended an open house to review the work of the Riverview Downtown Working Committee. The committee is made up of representatives from the community who meet monthly to draft a plan to improve the heart of Riverview.

Project Manager Elaine Lund of the Planning & Growth Management Department says, "The open house attendees gave mostly positive feedback, so now the working committee can look forward to developing specific implementation strategies over the next few months."

According to Lund, several of the Working Committee members volunteered at the open house. The members of the working committee were especially qualified to explain to their neighbors the ideas behind the Riverview Downtown District Plan and to understand the questions and concerns that their neighbors had about the plan, she says.

Vincent Crane, a Riverview resident and member of the working committee, says, "It has been a fairly long process [to develop the proposed plan]. The task force has come up with a workable compromise. I am supportive of the initiative."

Tom Saber, a longtime Riverview resident, came to the open house because he lives in close proximity to where the proposed changes are being made and he wanted to get some information on what is being planned.

"I have mixed feelings about the plan," he says. "I understand the value of a mixed development but I also like it as it is. There will be more activities in the area as a result of the new plan. I like what we have."

According to a document provide by the Planning & Growth Department on written comments from residents who attend the open house, 29 residents stated that they liked the working committee's proposed plan and five residents indicated that they disliked it.

"People felt it was a good solution," says Tim Jagodzinski, a member of the working committee. "Traffic on U.S. Hwy. 301 was a concern mentioned by citizens and something will be done."

The Riverview Downtown District is located near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 301 and Riverview Dr. The adopted Riverview Community Plan, a vision for the future development of this diverse community, includes the direction to prepare the Riverview Downtown District Plan.
