The Riverview Garden Club is once again ready for one of its biggest fundraiser events of the year. Built on the success from previous years, the annual Garden Club Plant and Rummage Sale will be held this year on February 16 at the Riverview Civic Center located at 11020 Park Dr., beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m.
Plants and seedlings, many of which are being donated by area nurseries at bargain prices, will be on sale for all plant lovers. There will be baked goods, household items, clothes, books, jewelry and more. In addition, several raffles will be given out on some other great items throughout the day.
"We give a lot to charity," said long-time garden club member Laura Iuzzolino, who explained that the Riverview Garden Club will use the proceeds from the event to support an area gardening and horticultural student seeking a degree in horticulture or a related field with a $1,000 scholarship.
"Anything over that amount we send to other charities, just as we have done in the past," said Iuzzolino.
In 2007, the Riverview Garden Club was able to donate to Meals on Wheels, the VA Entertainment Patients' Fund, Seeds of Hope and the American Troops. The club was also able to spruce up the grounds around the American flag at the Riverview Civic Center as well as do some landscaping at several local area school grounds.
Riverview Garden Club members meet every second Wednesday of the month to discuss upcoming events and ways to be involved with the local community. Chair Marlene Kirst said the plant and rummage sale event is one of the most important fundraisers the club holds annually.
"We really count on the Plant and Rummage Sale to be able to give back to the community," she said.
Everyone is encouraged to arrive early and enjoy the best bargains of the day. According to Kirst, all the items tend to sell quickly, so it is best to get there early and grab the best bargains.
