Dinner Auction To Benefit School

By Carisa Biesecker

Kids In Balance (KIB) is opening its doors to adults- no, not for classes, but instead, to celebrate its first annual Charity Dinner and Silent Auction.

On February 28 at 6 p.m., KIB will take over M.J. Barleyhoppers, located at 6264 Winthrop Town Centre Ave. in Riverview within Winthrop Town Centre, to raise funds for the 2008 school year. Hoping to raise $2,500, the nonprofit organization will contribute all funds raised towards scholarships for students as well as new equipment and programs for the school.

Those in attendance will be able to bid on gift certificates to local restaurants, passes to local theme parks and attractions, gift certificates to local boutiques, a one-night stay at a local bed and breakfast, a round of golf for four at a high ranking golf course and much more. All the while, guests will be able to partake from a smorgasbord of buffet items from an onion ale sauce covered chicken to filet tips in a mushroom sauce and multiple sides and desserts.

Opened in January of 2007, KIB is described as unique through its being "run by licensed therapists who create the classes and lead them, too. They combine fun, therapy and learning that don't stop in the center; they work with the caregivers to make sure that the fundamentals they learn at KIB continue at home," stated Director Jennifer Leigh who is also a speech therapist at the center. "With therapists directing the classes, they understand how kids learn and develop differently and adjust their techniques to meet the child's needs."

Knowing its method to success, parents whose child may be having difficulties with speech and comprehension or dealing with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism or cerebral palsy or an infant with feeding issues can choose from a variety of classes which include Mom and Baby Balance for ages 0-12 months, Toddler Balance for ages 1-4 years, Speech Sound Balance for grades k-5, Reading Balance for grades k-2 and Performance Balance for grades k-5. Creative Writing and Social and School Skills are also being offered for grades k-12. Classes average $125 for eight classes which are an hour long each with the facility being open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

"Our goal is to be a resource to the community and that is what the event is affording us to be," stated Leigh.

Those interested in attending the event can purchase tickets for $30 each or call it a date and bring a loved one for $50 per couple. For ticket information, call 677-8450.
