The HCC District Board of Trustees approved the selection of Dr. Allen Witt as the new president of the SouthShore Center campus at their meeting in May.

Witt has served as the founding Dean of Academic Affairs of the SouthShore Center, located in Ruskin, since its opening and at the Sun Point Center prior to the opening of the campus in 2007. Witt has led the academic programming on the campus, supervised all partnerships, including the Lennard Collegiate Academy, as well as onsite partnerships with Webster University and St. Leo University and represented the campus on numerous business and industry, civic, and charitable boards. Prior to his arrival at HCC, Witt served as the associate academic dean at Palm Beach Community College and as a department chair at Broward Community College. Witt also has extensive teaching experience and has published numerous journal articles and papers on higher education as well as co-authored America’s Community Colleges: The First Century, a nationally-recognized book chronicling the first 100 years of our country’s community colleges.

The SouthShore Campus, created as a learning laboratory for innovation, community engagement and sustainability to serve the communities of Ruskin, SouthShore, Sun City, Apollo Beach and Wimauma, will mark its first anniversary this summer. Built as the first gold-certified community college in Florida by the U.S. Green Building Council, the campus has exceeded its initial enrollment projections by 100 percent, serving over 2,000 students in its first year of operations.

Witt assumed the campus presidency in May.
