Update: The three candidates for Brandon’s Honorary Mayor’s campaign raised more than $50,000 for local charities in the month of June up to July 4 when Lisa Rodriguez, representing Center Place was crowned this year’s Honorary Mayor.

The Brandon Honorary Mayor’s race is celebrating its 52nd year of raising monies for local charities. The race, hosted by the Community Roundtable, an organization which hosts the annual Brandon Fourth of July Parade, is intended as a way for candidates to raise the most funds for charity in one month.

This year, three candidates have stepped up to the plate and filled the month with activities for families, car enthusiasts, Bunco players and more.

The events kick-off on Tuesday, June 1, with a combined candidate event at the AMC Regency 20 in  Brandon theatres, where former Honorary Mayor Tammy Holmberg will host a Sex and the City 2 ladies night. For $20 per ticket, ladies will enjoy the new movie, food, prizes, vendors and more. Each candidate will have their own theatre to fill.

The race runs through the annual Fourth of July parade, which will begin on Sunday, July 4, at 6:30 p.m. on a new route this year, where the new Honorary Mayor is named.

The Honorary Mayor will represent his or her community as a dignitary throughout the year at events. All monies must be raised between June 1 and July 4 of each year with 80 percent of funds raised going to designated charities, 10 percent to the sponsoring organization and 10 percent to the Community Roundtable.
