Candidates threw their hats in the ring as a kick off to this year’s Honorary Mayor’s Race in Riverview

The tradition continues this year as members of the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce recently gathered at Salute! Sports Grill to see who would throw their hat in the ring and compete for title of Riverview’s Honorary Mayor for 2012.
Each candidate enters the race in hopes of raising money through fundraising and events for a charity of his or her choice and the chamber. Each dollar raised is counted as a vote and in the end the one who collects the most money is ultimately named honorary mayor.
This year’s candidates include Alley Cat Pest Control co-owner Lisa Kennedy, whose charity of choice is Faces of Courage. Faces of Courage, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization providing life enriching experiences to kids, women and families touched by cancer and/or blood disorders. Stuart Mackey, owner of Mackey Productions, threw his hat in the ring with a goal of raising money for LifeCare of Brandon. Previously known as the Brandon Care Pregnancy Center, LifeCare of Brandon is a nonprofit, non-denominational, non-political organization that is committed to providing compassion, information and support to women, couples and families facing the challenge of an unplanned pregnancy. The Joshua House will benefit from the campaign of Wendy Milenkevich, of The Preserve at Alafia. Joshua House is a safe haven for abused, abandoned and neglected children in Tampa, offering a therapeutic residential group care program that provides a protected, nurturing, family-like environment for children 6-17. The group is rounded out by Gabrielle Perham, of Mace Multimedia, who is supporting the Riverview Boys and Girls Club. This facility recently broke ground on the campus of Resurrection Catholic Church, located at 6819 Krycul Ave. in Riverview, and, when it opens, will provide a safe and supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. “We are thrilled to have such a great group running for honorary mayor this year,” said chamber President Sherri-McClean Walker. “Every dollar raised is for a good cause and it is amazing that each one of these people is willing to give up their time to make a commitment to make a better community.”
