On May 28, the Medical Staff at Brandon Regional Hospital awarded 17 $1,000 scholarships to students graduating from area high schools. The scholarships were presented by Dr. Dragos Zanchi, Chief of the Medical Staff and Dr. Insoon Park.

The high school scholarship recipients are selected from high schools located in Eastern Hillsborough County and  include East Bay, Riverview, Spoto, Bloomingdale, Lennard, Durant, Brandon, Armwood, Strawberry Crest and Newsome. Additional scholarships are awarded to hospital employee dependents.

The following individuals were selected to receive the 2013 Medical Staff Scholarships:

Brian Allen, Newsome High School; Brittany Coca, Bloomingdale High School; Daniel DeBrigard, Strawberry Crest High School; Kaitlyn Killebrew, Riverview High School; Nichole Leon, Armwood High School; Gloria Reyes, Lennard High School; Jordan Singletary, Durant High School; and Asasia Richardson, East Bay High School.

The following dependents of Brandon Regional Hospital employees were selected:

Scott Bartlett, Strawberry Crest High School; Amber Cocoa, Bloomingdale High School; Starryin Cellamare, Bloomingdale High School; Samantha Meere, Strawberry Crest High School; Joshua Langkoop, Newsome High School; Christopher Taylor, Newsome High School; Gavin Scheele, Newsome High School; Laura Dukalec, Newsome High School; and Alyssa Smith, East Bay High School.

The annual scholarships are funded through the dues that physicians pay to be a member of the medical staff at Brandon Regional Hospital. Dr. Joseph Corcoran, Chief Medical Officer for Brandon Regional Hospital said, “This is so exciting to see young people about to step into a whole new world”

Dr. Zanchi said, “Education is priceless. I am an immigrant. I come from the other side of the world, but my education has allowed me to have a profession that allows me to have a good life in the United States.”

Applications for the scholarships are made available in January.
