RVAthorAlarie author picRiverview resident Shirley Alarie spent the first 20 years of her career in an industrial manufacturing environment, running around the hamster wheel as fast as her legs would carry her. Her breast cancer diagnosis jammed on the brakes and forced her to put life in perspective. Her journey since breast cancer has been focused on making a positive difference in the world.

Now an author, Alarie presents The Road Paved in Pink: A Practical and Personal Guide for Breast Cancer Patients and Their Loved Ones with an innovative twist. The generous “Pay it Forward” program was designed to reach as many people in need as possible.

“My objective, from the beginning, was to help people and this program makes me feel I’m accomplishing my goal,” said Alarie.

Through her Website, Alarie will send free “Pay it Forward” books to recipients recently diagnosed with breast cancer or their loved ones – with one stipulation. Customers requesting these books must be willing to log their first name and location on her Website, and pass the book along to someone else in need when they are finished with it – and so on. As the books travel around the country helping people, their journey will be tracked on her Website. Ten books will be provided each month for this purpose.

The Road Paved in Pink: A Practical and Personal Guide for Breast Cancer Patients and Their Loved Ones is about help and hope in a time of need. In the book, Lovey’s nightmare has begun. She’s been thrust into a terrifying and confusing journey, joining the nearly 250,000 women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. If Lovey is fortunate, she has an excellent support team, also known as Angels. Author and breast cancer survivor Alarie presents a realistic, inspiring, and educational guide, covering the gamut of topics that Lovey and Angel may encounter.

The Road Paved in Pink is part two of Alarie’s breast cancer series, serving to heighten awareness of breast cancer reconstruction options. Losing the Girls: My Journey Through Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy and Beyond is her educational and inspirational memoir, written with the intention to entertain as well as spread awareness of nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM).
