Learning new skills and knowing how to apply them in any given situation could be a wonderful benefit. Brandon resident and Owner Carmen Wilson from Gigi’s Fabric Shop, will host its After School Sewing Program beginning Tuesday, September 6.

“The program focuses on teaching students how to develop their sewing skills, while working together amongst others,” said Wilson.

Ages 8-15 can participate in the four-week program, which meets once a week on Tuesdays from 4:15-5:45 p.m. The program costs $115 per month and includes all materials, and each student will have their own sewing machine to use. During the program, students get the opportunity to work with ongoing projects and implement those skills that they mastered. Students will also learn how to color coordinate, thread their own sewing machines, read patterns and much more. As far as the project goes, students can make a fox and a backpack.

In regards to the program, Wilson mentioned she likes the fact that it can be a great self-esteem builder. Along with that, students get a chance to become an accountability partner toward their peers. For instance, if a beginner comes in, a more experienced individual will buddy up with them.

“It does not matter what their sewing level is because our goal is to have them learn from each other,” said Wilson.

Wilson wants the community to know that Gigi’s Fabric Shop is very family oriented and its number one goal is to reach out to children.

To register call Gigi’s Fabric Shop at 661-9000. The program runs through the month of December and dates for that can be found at www.gigisfabricshop.com and
