Staff Report

What do live music, a castle, a zoo and over a half ton of food have in common? They’re all a part of the 18th annual Denizens of the Deep Southern Family Fish Fry being held Saturday, November 5, at Rotary’s Camp Florida, located at 1915 Camp Florida Rd. in Brandon, north of S.R. 60 off Lakewood Dr. All the fun begins at 11 a.m. and rocks on until 4 p.m.
Denizens is a perfect opportunity to have a great time with family and friends, eat some great food and support worthy local charities in the process. For the members of Brandon ’86 Rotary, Denizens is a time to work hard to raise money for those charities.
Ron Shillady, board member of Rotary Brandon ’86, is coordinating this year’s event. Shillady said, “This will be our 18th Denizens event held at Rotary’s Camp Florida. One of our goals is to enlist local Brandon businesses to participate with their sponsorships. This gives them recognition as well as provides money for our charities. It’s hard work for our members, but we have dedicated members that happen to be great people.”
The event is an all-you-can-eat of delicious fish, shrimp, hush puppies, sausage and more. Beer, soft drinks, coffee and tea are also included. While adults are enjoying the live music, children have games and events galore in the kid’s area, including a two-story bouncy castle and separate bouncy slide all under the watchful supervision of Brandon Y volunteers.
The cost is $25 per adult, $10 for children, ages 13-18, and children 12 and under get in free with a donation of one can of food, per child, for the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO). In response to current economic difficulties, prices have been reduced from last year.
Great food and fun with family and friends, Denizens of the Deep has become one of the don’t miss events of the year and ranks as one of Brandon’s largest charitable fundraisers. For more information and directions, please call (863) 670-0410.

Imagine having a headache so excruciating it requires surgery. Chiari is a neurological disorder where the brain descends out of the skull and puts pressure on the spine. It affects people of all ages, races, causes many symptoms including severe headaches, neck pain, and weaknesses in the arms, legs, balance and respiratory problems.

Plant City resident Serenity Harper is the site organizer for the Fourth Annual Conquer Chiari Walk Across America to be held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in Al Lopez Park, 4810 North Himes Ave. Tampa.

Harper, who has had problems since birth, was diagnosed with chiari, along with her daughter.

And tragically women have a 50 percent chance of passing the disease to their child. Pregnancy can make chiari worse. Doctors are trying to identify the chromosome that causes chiari.

Chiari limits activities such as running or weight lifting. And while some people think car accidents cause the disease some people think it’s congenital.

“There is so little knowledge about it,” Harper stated. However, what Harper knows as well as other chiari patients is chiari gets worse without treatment. Unfortunately, brain surgery is the only choice patients have.

“It’s about quality of life,” Harper remarked. “I am not any better off,” said Harper who has been through 2 surgeries.

Because of the trauma inflicted on her physically, Harper spent 7-8 days in ICU with numerous complications to the point of almost losing her life.

“I see too many times people have the second surgery because surgeons don’t have enough knowledge. That’s my belief,” Harper stated.

The Chiari Walk will raise money and educate people about chiari. Chiari is a foreign to many people.

“I hope to find more effective treatments for my daughter and other people and find out more about genetic links,” Harper concluded optimistically.

The Walk is free to participate, and those who preregister and donate $25 receive a Conquer Chiari shirt. There will be activities such as face painting and raffle. You can pre- register online at

If you’ve been meaning to try out some of Tampa Bay’s best restaurants, mark your calendars, a great opportunity is just around the corner.
The 2011 annual DINE Tampa Bay Restaurant Week will take place August 19-September 2 offering diners specially priced three-course meals at some of the area’s beat restaurants, with participants including Brandon’s own GrillSmith and a wide variety of cuisines from fondue to sushi from downtown Tampa to the Pinellas County beaches.
In addition to their standard fare, each participating restaurant will provide a special Restaurant Week menu which will suggest three options for each course. The special menu will offer $25, $35 or $45 prix-fixe, three-course menus (appetizer, entrée and dessert) throughout the week. Prices are per person and exclude beverages, tax and gratuities.
Valrico resident Shannon Carlton attended the DINE Tampa Bay launch party recently and is looking forward to taking advantage of special offers to try some new spots during restaurant week.
“What a great way to try new restaurants in our area,” says Carlton, who was in New York City for its restaurant week four years ago and was very excited to find out Tampa was joining the dining trend. “The celebrity cook-off and food samples at the launch party were an excellent way to get diners excited about what is sure to be a great event.”
Presented by Tampa Bay & Company and the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association, DINE Tampa Bay, has been designed to stimulate business and introduce new customers to restaurants located throughout the Tampa Bay area.
“DINE Tampa Bay offers visitors, convention attendees and local residents the opportunity to experience Tampa Bay area fine dining restaurants at a value price,” said Vice President of Partnership for Tampa Bay & Company Joyce Fisk. “Plus, participating restaurants have the opportunity to expose new potential customers to the wonderful dining options that are available.”

There is a place in Wimauma, only about five or six miles south of Sun City off U.S. Hwy. 301, that is home to some magnificent creatures. These animals live on seven acres tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but to the volunteers at Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, these animals’ well being is a top priority.
The animal asylum is named after one of its residents, a 9-year-old black bear Elmira.
The sanctuary is home to mostly big cats and bears, but there is a variety of species that make up the 50 residents at Elmira’s. All but one of these majestic animals was born in captivity. This sanctuary is a place for animals that could not survive in the wild.
“All the animals have their own personalities and they need a home,” said volunteer director Deborah Kaprive.
Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a non-profit organization, has always been funded by generous donations and fundraisers.
“We are entirely staffed by volunteers,” said Kaprive.
After much consideration and gaining approval from the USDA, Elmira’s sanctuary is now open to the public for tours. Tours will be held every first and third Saturday of every month from 11a.m. to 12 Noon. Admission for the tours is $10 for adults, and $5 for ages 17 and under and free for children 3 and under.
“The tours are a lot of fun and we are excited to be open to the public,” said Kaprive.
Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary is always in need of qualified volunteer help.
“There is something for everyone here to help with,” said Kaprive, “We need all the same things that every household needs.”
Volunteering is not all fun and games here though, but helping the animals is very rewarding.
“You won’t be hugging cougars; these are wild animals,” said Kaprive.
The staff is dedicated to making the animals that call this place home comfortable and happy. One visit to the sanctuary and it is easy to see that these animals are happy to call this place home.
“We aren’t here to entertain; we are a sanctuary,” said Kaprive.
For more information about volunteering, donating, or becoming a member of Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary visit them online at www.elmiraswildlife.org.
On Sunday, August 21, Elmira’s will celebrate its official grand opening with an event called “Thai one on for the Tigers.” This event will be held from 4-8 p.m. It will consist of authentic Thai food, live music and a tour of the animals. Admission will be $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
To contact Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary, call (941) 776-8975 or visit www.elmiraswildlife.org. Elmira’s is located at 13910 Seminole Trl. in Wimauma. Take exit 246 off I-75.

Dan Jansen of Magic Touch Auto Salon joins a handpicked team of thirty detailers who will travel to Seattle the week of July 25 – August 1 to restore two historic paragons in U.S. aviation history. The first presidential jet plane (Air Force One) known as SAM (Special Air Missions) 970 was a flying Oval Office for four U.S. Presidents including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. The Boeing 707-120 also entertained many international VIPs such as Nikita Khrushchev and Henry Kissinger. The team will also refurbish a rare WWII B29 Bomber known as T-Square 54, both of which are on exhibit in Seattle’s Museum of Flight.

Renny Doyle, owner of Attention to Details, a master-level detailing training facility located in Big Bear Lake, California, organized the pro bono event, selecting the best thirty detailers out of over two hundred fifty of his graduates worldwide. Doyle, a FishHawk resident who specializes in detailing high-end automobiles and private/corporate jets, restored the deteriorating exterior of Air Force One in 2003. “It made my career due to the level of workmanship I delivered,” Doyle says. “I wanted to offer that opportunity to the many small business owners we train, with hopes they receive the same level of success and recognition for excellence I did. The detailing industry is often thought of as very blue collar, but those chosen for this project are the best of the best in terms of workmanship and professionalism.”

This is not the first time Dan Jansen of Magic Touch Auto Salon has been invited to join the Air Force One team, but it is the first time he has been able to attend. After trading in a desk job for his true calling detailing fine automobiles, Jansen opened his shop in 2004, taking his passion to a professional level after attending formal training in the art of detailing at Attention to Details. “If you are going to learn from the best, go with the company in charge of detailing Air Force One!,” he laughs, “We now attend annual continuing education and seminars to stay abreast of the constantly changing technology of waxes, paint sealants, polishing methods and ‘green’ detailing.”

Jansen has had a passion for cleaning and detailing for as long as he can remember. “At 7 years old, while the other neighborhood kids were playing Atari on a Saturday morning, you could find me in the driveway with a garden hose and a bucket of suds cleaning my Dad’s cars!”

For more information about Jansen’s participation in the Air Force One project, contact him at 857-7033 or visit his website at www.tampamobiledetail.com. “I am excited about being a part of an elite detailing team who will literally, polish history!”

Motorists should continue to avoid the intersection of Windhorst Road and Parsons Avenue in Brandon while repairs are made to a section of pavement which collapsed Tuesday.

One northbound lane of Parsons and the westbound turn lanes on Windhorst are closed. Additional detours and lane closures are possible as Public Works crews begin the repairs.

Motorists who must travel through the intersection are urged to exercise caution around the workers, observe traffic control measures, and expect delays.

It is not known at this time how long the work will take or how long traffic will be impacted.

It is not clear yet why the 6-foot-square section of roadway collapsed. Public Utilities crews determined Tuesday night that the collapse was not caused by a sewage line break.

For more information, call the Public Works Customer Service Number at 635-5400.

More than 300 local marching band members will travel more than 3,500 miles to perform in the ‘Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth’, the Calgary Stampede this July. And, this is no ordinary band, ages of members of St. Petersburg’s own Second Time Arounders Marching Band range from 18 to 84. The band, comprised of adults with previous marching band experience, practices and performs in St. Petersburg and travels the state and internationally each year.

The current band consists of all marching band instruments including Baritone, Clarinet, Flute/Piccolo, Mellophone, Oboe, Percussion, Saxophone, Sousaphone, Trombone, Trumpet, Majorettes, Flag, Rifles, Honor Guard, banner carrier and more. All previous participants qualify for the voluntary organization.

Brandon resident Dana DeShong has always played the Trombone. In fact, he can hardly remember a time when he didn’t play an instrument. In fact, his twin brother, Dwayne, also plays Saxophone so the pair are a musical family. The brothers graduated from Turkey Creek High School-now Turkey Creek middle and grew up in the area.

“I played in the marching band in high school and wanted to continue but USF didn’t have a football team or a marching band at that time,” said DeShong. But, in the 1980s, the Bucaneer Band offered a great opportunity for musicians to play and DeShong had the opportunity to play in the band. But, after the band disbanded, DeShong discovered the Second Time Arounders and has now been with the band for 20 years.

During that time, he has traveled to Ireland, across the U.S. and was a part of the largets marching band to ever play in the Macy’s parade.

“Anybody out of college and looing for a place to play in a marching band is welcome with us,” said DeShong. “We are a show band and there is nowhere else around to march.”

Despite being active with SCCA Stock Car Racing and two young sons, DeShong says the committment to the band is worth it and he looks forward to taking the entire family to Calgary in July.

While in Calgary, the Rounders will perform in the annual Stampede parade, plus perform a demonstration field show in the Calgary arena as well as several concerts thought the city.

Started in 1912, the Calgary Stampede is an enormously popular 10-day event held every summer in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This annual exhibition celebrates the agricultural and historical legacy of the West and has become known as the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. One million visitors enjoy the festival, a world class rodeo, an international band competition, shopping, the state fair, and concerts!

The Greater St. Petersburg Second Time Arounders Marching Band was founded in 1983 by Bill Findeison, the conductor, and Herb Melleney, then director of the Festival of States. The band was formed to perform for the Festival of States celebration in St. Petersburg, Florida. With over 500 members ranging in age from 18 to 84 and performing 5-7 times per year, the band only requires experience in a High School or college marching band.

The band has made appearances in festivals and marched in parades all over the world including Key West, FL, Portland, OR, Orlando, FL, Dublin, Ireland, San Antonio, TX, and Savannah, GA, and most recently New York City, NY in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade!

After the recent devastation in Japan, many people are seeking out ways to help the victims of the tsunami. At Music Showcase on Saturday, July 16, the community has an opportunity to do so by attending a Japan Aid concert from 4–9 p.m.
Some of the top artists performing at the concert include Susan from KORE, Ngaire Young, Aleshea Harris, Artist Block and John Clark.
Eighteen-year-old Rebekah Taylor, who is heading up the event, believes that a concert is a good way to help, “because music is a common language that unites the world,” she said.
Taylor has always had a passion for helping with international affairs. She is heading off to Stetson in the fall to pursue her dream of becoming a U.S. Ambassador. “After seeing the devastation in Japan I just couldn’t stand by and not do anything,” she commented.
Taylor’s goal is to raise $10,000. “Yes, it’s quite ambitious,” she commented, “but we are hoping for a large turnout and plenty of sponsors.” She is working through a group called Thrivent, a Christian organization that has promised to match 50 percent of the proceeds. “So if we do raise $10,000, we will actually be sending over $15,000.”
In addition to live music, the community has the opportunity to enjoy different contests, which are fun for all ages. One is a costume play (Cosplay) contest, where contestants dress up as their favorite character and are judged on their likeness to a photo of the character.
Another is an art contest, either traditional style Japanese or modern day manga drawing, with judges and a people’s choice category. In addition, there is a noodle-eating competition, in which contestants are challenged to eat a cup of noodles the fastest without using their hands.
Three vendors, PB&J Vending, Chick-fil-A and The Tea Room, are lined up to provide hamburgers and hotdogs, chicken sandwiches and hot teas at the event. The vendors have all agreed to donate 20 percent of their earnings from the event to the Japan donation fund.
ECHO will be holding a food drive as well to collect canned goods from attendees..
There is a $5 donation to attend. You can buy a ticket at the door. To find out more about this event, you can visit the Facebook page by typing in JapanAID, or you can e-mail Taylor at rebekah_taylor@live.com.
