Balm-Boyette Nature Preserve Closed Due To Wildfire

The Balm-Boyette Nature Preserve is closed until further notice due to a wildfire caused by a lightning strike, which occurred on July 28.

The lightning strike caused an extremely hot fire in approximately 100-120 acres of sand pines located on both sides of the main entrance. The fire is still hot and damage to the trees is a safety concern. Hillsborough County Parks Recreation and Conservation staff feels the damage to the trees could cause them to fall, and as a precaution, many will have to be taken down or removed once they do fall.

The major recreation component in this part of the Nature Preserve is 18 miles of off-road bicycle trails. The nearest off-road bicycle trail is Morris Bridge Park, 13330 Morris Bridge Road in Thonotosassa (near USF). The Alafia River State Park also offers off-road bicycle trails.

The Nature Preserve will reopen when conditions allow.

The Balm-Boyette Nature Preserve is located at 13998 Balm-Boyette Road in Lithia.

Contact the Conservation Services Office at 813-672-7876 for additional information.

Disney Heats Up With Return of Two Classics

left: "Captain EO," the 17-minute, classic 3-D film experience starring Michael Jackson has returned to the Imagination pavilion and is showing daily. right: Tinker Bell is all aglow as she leads the way in Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade as it returns to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort this summer.

Two Disney Parks are offering the return of two Disney Classics that are sure to encourage a sense of nostalgia and give fans an opportunity to share these historic and renewed favorites with friends, family and children.

At Magic Kingdom, the “Main Street Electrical Parade” has returned for a summer special. Now through August 14, Tinker Bell will be sprinkling her pixie dust to illuminate the classic parade and the parade’s highly recognizable musical theme is brightened by new technology..

The parade, which normally is featured at Disneyland Resort in California, was last at Walt Disney World Resort from 1999 into 2001. But it has returned to Magic Kingdom to headline “Summer Nightastic!” through Aug. 14and is showcasing lots of features never before seen – or heard – in Florida.

The parade twinkles with approximately half a million lights. Of those, nearly 10,000 are new “pixie dust” lights spread over the 23 parade floats. The new LED lights use one-quarter of the power of incandescent lights. The Tinker Bell float alone has more than 25,000 points of light and 75 percent are powered by an LED source.

Disney fans, the Jackson family from Lithia, is thrilled with the return of the parade. “We can remember coming to the parade as a young couple and now we can bring the whole family,” said Sarah who enjoyed the parade with children Sam, 5, Amanda, 3 and husband Rick.

And, over at Disney’s Epcot, Captain E/O, has made a resurrection. Starring Micheal Jackson, the original 3-D movie was released in the early 1990s. And, now just over 1 year since the icon’s passing, the movie is back in all its glory. Join Captain E/O, as he colors the devastated and dark world with color while delivering his ‘gift’. With traditionally pop choreography that is finding a modern twist, Jackson fans, families and Star Wars fans will appreciate the science fiction connection. Definitely worth a see this summer and as a bonus, this one is within an air-conditioned theatre!

Twenty-four years ago, entertainment superstar Michael Jackson joined forces with Disney, producer George Lucas and director Francis Ford Coppola to create a groundbreaking 17-minute 3-D film experience starring Jackson as Captain EO performing two original songs, and featuring Academy Award®-winning actress Anjelica Huston, and a cast of merry, mythical space characters with dual personalities who undergo magical transformations to become Jackson’s electronic band in conquering the forces of darkness. “Captain EO” played at Epcot from 1986-1994.

The attraction’s return provides new audiences the opportunity to experience the original 3-D production for the very first time, as well as a nostalgic look back for longtime fans wanting to see Michael Jackson in a rare performance created for the big screen.

The colorful Disney-created characters include: Hooter, the little green elephant-like creature who sneezes wild musical notes through his flute-like trunk; Fuzzball, the orange-haired space monkey with butterfly wings; the Geex, a golden-haired, two-faced personality with two left feet, one right foot and two shaggy heads named Idy and Ody; Major Domo, whose mirrored silver costume becomes a complete set of drums; and Minor Domo with his sparkling purple torso that turns into an electronic synthesizer played by Hooter.

“Captain EO” is presented multiple times daily at the Imagination pavilion at Epcot. It replaces “Honey, I Shrunk the Audience” which is planned to return at an undetermined date.

On March 12, 2010, Tampa will experience what more than 2.5 million people in Europe, Canada, and U.S. cities including Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Boston, Atlanta, and most recently, Miami have been astounded by the extravagant multimedia equestrian celebration for the eyes and ears that is Cavalia. Guests who attend the show will “ooh” and “ahh” in amazement at the beauty of the more than 60 4-legged artists in this eclectic cast. Crowds will cheer and rise in their seats during the incredible performances of some 40 2-legged artists, including acrobats, aerialists, riders, musicians and dancers. From March 12 – April 4, 2010 under the White Big Top at the Florida State Fairgrounds an exquisite, fast-paced, unforgettable 120-minute performance featuring the harmony between horse and man will find its home.

This spectacular production was created by Cirque du Soleil co-founder, Normand Latourelle, and is often compared to Cirque for the way it revolutionizes equestrian and performing arts, much like Cirque revolutionized the circus. Cavalia will stop in Tampa, as it makes the rounds to major cities on its North American tour, after touring in Europe for two years. “I had the opportunity to bring Cirque du Soleil for the first time to Florida in 1989,” says Normand Latourelle, Cavalia founder and artistic director. “I am extremely proud to introduce a new type of show to Tampa over 20 years later. I hope that the people will embrace Cavalia’s magic as much as they did two decades ago with cirque.”

Cavalia is not just a show for horse-lovers. Nor is it a show just for Cirque-fanatics. It is a lavish orchestration of multimedia, equestrian and performing arts designed to astound and entertain people of all ages and backgrounds. Under the world’s largest touring Big Top, which rises 100 feet above ground and spans more than 26,264 feet, 60 of the most magnificent creatures on the planet will express themselves in all their beauty, grace and strength on a 160-foot wide stage. While the horses gallop and cavort and, at times, run free completely unbridled, the show will incorporate unbelievable acrobatics, original live music and stunning special and lighting effects to create a dreamlike setting, making it apparent to see why this show has become a global sensation.

Cavalia features 12 different breeds of horses, including Arabians, Lusitanos, Spanish Pure Breed, Quarter Horses, and Paint horses from France, Canada, Spain and the United States. The featured 2-legged artists represent the nations of the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Portugal and Russia UK, France.

TICKETS – For its exclusive run in Tampa, Cavalia will be presented under the White Big Top pitched at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Tickets go on sale Friday, February 12, 2010. Regular tickets are priced from $34.50 to $99.00. And, if just sitting in the stands is not enough for you, the show can be customized for the complete VIP experience from $139 – $190, including a Horse Lovers Package that lets patrons tour Cavalia’s stables, and the Rendez-Vous Package that includes a tour of the stables, a cocktail/dinner reception and much more. Special pricing available for children, students, and seniors.

South Seas Island Resort Is In Top Ten Of Family Vacation Destinations

IMG_0786

Feeling the urge to hit the beach and craving the aquamarine Caribbean-type ocean waters, pristine sandy beaches complete with cabanas, umbrella drinks and service with style? Think you need to fly, boat or dream for a vacation like? Not so with South Seas Island Resort just three hours up I-75 on the historic Captiva Island. And, very much like an all-inclusive, once you are on-site on the 350-acre resort, everything is at your fingertips, or resort keycard which gives you access to all on-site recreation, food, ice cream, drinks, video games, spa treatments, fitness facilities, on-site Starbuck’s and more.

With families looking to ‘staycation’ more than ever, South Seas Island Resort is an excellent choice in a family destination, just a short drive away. Recently, the resort was honored to be named number three among the 10 Best Family Beach Resorts by Parents Magazine. South Seas Island Resort Managing Director Richard Hayduk, came to South Seas Island Resort, from a five-star Boca Raton destination and moved his family to take the position because he wanted to feel the historic ownership and pride in a property that he indeed found at South Seas Island Resort.

On a golf cart tour of the resort, (golf carts are available for guests to rent during their stay) Hayduk described the unique “resort village.” “The resort literally started as a key lime plantation producing the world’s largest crop of key limes. It was purchased in the 1800s and was a fishing camp.” Hayduk says that parts of the original bunkhouse still exist including fireplace mantel and brick flooring in King’s Crown where many wedding receptions and special events are held. “We have 330 acres and 990 units developed by Mariner Development and now owned by Blackstone Group,” says Hayduk. Blackstone Group is primary owner of Hilton Hotels.

The property offers accommodations for all needs. With hotel rooms, timeshare villas in one-three bedroom units with full kitchens and private million dollar condos and beach front single family homes available to rent through the resort. “We are eighty percent family oriented,” said Hayduk while giving a tour of the dual water-slide new H2Whoa! attraction in the Resort Pool Complex with sandy beach play area, two additional pools, cabanas, and hot tub with an ocean view overlook complete with sunset, dolphins and manatees. The resort is also offering new activities and programs designed especially for children and families including the Go! South Seas programs which include the Go! Fish program. A very successful addition to “things to do” at the resort that teaches kids of all ages to fish and learn about the importance of “catch and release.” “Once you come through the gates, you feel like family,” said Hayduk while nodding and introducing staff who have been with the property for 30 years.

Valrico residents Carol and Josh Cole have been to South Seas Island Resort twice and call their visits, “one of the most wonderful times of my life.” In May, the couple stayed in a beach front villa with a breathtaking sunset view to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. “I really can’t choose what the very best part of this resort is. Whether it was sunning on the beach, hunting for seashells, dining in the Harbourside Bar & Grill, walking among the beautiful yachts and boats docked there, or simply staying in our room and ordering in delivery, this was truly a time that I will always treasure.” In June, the couple and their three children returned to the resort. “One new thing we discovered this trip was the poolside cabanas; a much appreciated respite from the hot sun. We enjoyed lunch there and each cabana comes complete with refrigerator, lots of comfy seating and a TV.”

The entire property is family accessible from beach front to poolside by a trolley and trail system throughout. While cars are welcome, guests really just need a keycard and a towel to get around the resort with eight restaurants, multiple boat marinas with all size boats available for rent. With sunset cruises leaving for nightly tours of the bay, and pools, playgrounds, hot tubs, beach, boardwalk, golf course,  and even a sailing school on-site, South Seas Island Resort has something for everyone.

In addition to being a family destination, it offers the largest convention space available in the area. With 31,000 sq. ft. available, conventions, meetings, events and courses can be scheduled. And, with the many on-site eateries ranging from an upscale deli, Southern style BBQ to high end seafood, all catering requirements can be met. The resort is located at 5400 Plantation Rd. on Captiva Island.

For reservations and tempting photo galleries, visit www.southseas.com or call 866-565-5089.
