Center Places Seeks Wild Dames

Wild Dame Night at Center PlaceThe men may have rotary night, but the ladies have Wild Dame Night. This evening for adult ladies only will be held on Saturday, February 21, at Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association located at 619 Vonderburg Dr. Ste. B, adjacent to the Brandon Library. This year’s event is not only a night of social time, dinner and entertainment, but also a fundraiser, with the proceeds going towards children’s programming. With sponsors CMB Creations, Platinum Bank, TECO, Dynamic Printing, the Center for Radiation Oncology, Wachovia Bank, Durkin & Mason, C.P.A.’s, P.A., Valrico State Bank, Chick-fil-A at Lake Brandon Village, Stages Productions and Music Showcase, monetary funding for Center Place is expected to be generous despite the downturn in the economy.
Dawn Galia, art director, participated in her first Wild Dame Night last year. “It is really a lot of fun…the event is very popular, and we do sell out,” said Galia. The fun begins at 6 p.m. with social time and wine. A sit-down dinner will be catered by Affairs to Remember, along with decadent desserts. These include chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate-dipped fruit, chocolate-covered pretzels, key lime tarts, pecan tarts, mousse parfaits, rum bourbon balls, cheesecake, and many others. Stages Productions will host Sleeping Beauty – Pajama Party whereat ladies can wear their pajamas. Said Galia, “Sleeping Beauty is actually one of our children’s shows for this season, but it will be changed from a children’s version to an adult version with funny anecdotes added.”
In addition to the above activities, a 50/50 raffle and 20 door prizes will be given out by the end of the night. Last year, the raffle was approximately $800, and the event raised $11,088 after expenses for the children’s programming. Also, the funding will go towards the Saturday, April 25, Art Gala held at the Pepin Hospitality Center. After all, this event is one of the major fundraisers.
Tickets are $50 per person. There are 180 spots, along with sponsored tickets, which sell for $800 for a table of eight. Galia emphasized how quick the event sells out, so she urges those interested to purchase tickets as soon as possible. “If you have never attended a Wild Dame Night, I would highly recommend it. It is a great event and the proceeds benefit Center Place’s children’s programming. It is a fun ladies night out,” commented Galia. Please call Center Place at 685-8888 for ticket sales. Contact Galia at cpbrandon@verizon.net or at cpfinearts@verizon.net. Visit www.centerplacebrandon.com for additional information and upcoming events.

New League Makes FishHawk Home

FishHawk LacrosseOriginated by Native Americans as a game “said to be played ‘for the pleasure of the Creator,’” according to the online Wikipedia, lacrosse is becoming popular yet again in the States with the FishHawk Coyotes Youth Lacrosse being forged.
Kicking off in December, the new team is inviting those in second-sixth grades to enroll in the team, with the rec team playing second to fourth grade students and the youth team welcoming fifth through sixth grade students. Up to 25 players will be chosen to put their skills to the test on the fields of the FishHawk Sports Complex, with 10 being on the field at one time.
“The team was started because there was an opportunity for lacrosse to be played at the FishHawk Sports Complex,” says coach and FishHawk resident Brian Lemon, who is vice president of Operations for the National Lacrosse League, having once joined the ranks as a professional lacrosse player for the National Lacrosse League. “We had the choice to bring the team under the umbrella of the FishHawk Youth Sports Association and felt it was a good time to do so.”
Amidst 10 other lacrosse teams connected to the Tampa Bay area’s West Florida Lacrosse League, the FishHawk Coyotes Youth Lacrosse will play a total of 12 games from January to mid-April, with practices beginning in late November. Led by Lemon and fellow coaches Tim Jones and Andrew Cox, also FishHawk residents, the sport of lacrosse “teaches sportsmanship, how to work with your teammates and life lessons so that they can transfer into the real world, done so by the provision of a solid coaching philosophy,” mentions Lemon. “Really, it is all about the kids.”
Any first-year players are welcome to register for the team as ongoing sign-ups continue. The cost is $175 which includes the player’s uniform as well as all equipment being supplied, though players will have to furnish their own lacrosse stick. The league has future plans to develop a middle school team as well as a girls program in the upcoming year, though girls are welcome to sign-up for the current teams until this concept becomes a reality. For further information or to sign-up for the team, visit www.leaguelineup.com/FHCOYOTES or call Lemon at 689-2070.

Lumsden Trace to Get Reclaimed Water

Lumsden TraceA local community is soon to have reclaimed water in its neighborhood. Lumsden Trace, located on Lumsden Rd. between Mulrennan Rd. and St. Cloud Ave., will begin construction for its new sprinkler system and other uses for reclaimed water in October. The project is expected to take six months.
According to Shelly Spehr, senior supervisor for Hillsborough County Water Resource Services, Hillsborough County staff will work with homeowners’ associations to evaluate the possibility of reclaimed water within the community.
If it is identified as a possible reclaimed water project, the community will be placed on a waiting list and will be notified in writing when reclaimed water becomes available. Spehr said seven subdivisions are on the county’s waiting list to get reclaimed water, with 21 to 1,553 homes in each.
“Once the reclaimed water is available, we send out petitions with a preliminary cost estimate and the residents can petition to bring the service to their community. More than 50 percent of the parcel owners must sign the petitions,” she said. “A representative from the homeowners’ association can contact me to see if their community is eligible to be put on the waiting list.” To be eligible, subdivisions must be within one-fourth of a mile of an existing reclaimed water line and show a majority (50 percent) of residents support connected to it.
Approved uses for reclaimed water include: landscape irrigation via an in-ground sprinkler system. Reclaimed water may also be applied using a hose bibb (connection) assembly that is located in a below-ground locked vault or service box and clearly labeled as being of non-potable quality (bearing the words in English and Spanish: “Do Not Drink – No Beber” together with the equivalent standard international symbol).
From the reclaimed water line at Lumsden Rd. and St. Cloud Ave., county crews will run a main line on Lumsden Rd. into the subdivision. The county will pick up the $127,000 construction tab.
Crews also will bury 2,600 ft. of pipe on Lumsden Trace Cir., where it intersects with Lumsden Rd., and connect it to the sprinkler systems on both sides Lumsden Trace Circle. The $311,000 cost of that leg of the project will be divided among homeowners.
Spehr said homeowners can pay for connection to the reclaimed water line all at once or spread it out over the next 20 years on their property tax bills.
For more information, visit the Hillsborough County’s Website at http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/water/reclaimedwater/ .
