Florist Celebrates New Location

Southbay Hosts Holiday Stroll
The Shoppes of Southbay will hold the first annual South Shore Holiday Stroll on Saturday, December 13. All proceeds will toward helping to stock local food pantries. The event will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the shopping center on the southeast corner of Big Bend Rd. and U.S. Hwy. 301 in Riverview.
This is a free event open to the public. Guests will begin their stroll at the eastern end of the center where every family will be given a card to be stamped or signed by each of the shops. Each shop will have a sampling or goody for the families. Santa will be at the end of the stroll and will be available for pictures. Once the card is filled out completely the family will be given a goody bag and their card will be entered into a raffle for one of five beautiful gift baskets.
Participating shops include: Smoothie King, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Little Ceasars, Risque, Goin’ Postal, Sweetbay, Great Clips, Sonlight, Playmania, Leslies, Dove Interiors, Planet Beach, New Identities, LeBelle’s, Southbay Auto Service, Game Time, Buffalo Wild Wings, Goodyear and Fifth Third Bank.

Self Storage Hosts Ribbon Cutting
Self Storage Centers of America, located at 9234 Causeway Blvd., is hosting a ribbon cutting with the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce on December 16 at 12 Noon.

Piascik Hosts Signing Party
Josh Piascik signed his letter of intent to play football at West Virginia, Wesleyan. Josh and parents Jake and Debbie Piascik, (owners of Dream Limousine) and his sister Breana, all of Valrico, were all happy with his choice. Josh was offered numerous scholarships to play throughout the nation and was accepted by several universities just on his academics alone with a GPA of 4.74. “The hometown feeling and the academic options made it an easy choice,” Josh stated. “Knowing that the head coach was also going to be there for the next five years also helped me to make a decision,” he continued. University of South Florida, Florida State University, Kentucky State, Carson Newman, and University of Central Florida just to name a few also accepted Joshua based only on his academics. “When I was requested to visit 19 different colleges at the East Bay High School recruiting fair, I was just overwhelmed, I mean it was a great compliment. With the support of my family, a lot of hard work and the good Lord watching over me, it will be all worth it.”
East Bay Senior’s Death A Shock
With only two weeks left in school, the South Shore community and many within the County were shocked to learn of the death of East Bay senior and Indians former starting quarterback Rex Ballenger Jr., 18.
The Apollo Beach resident was driving west on Big Bend Rd. in Gibsonton when his Saturn slammed into the back of a stopped tractor-trailer. Ballenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, according to a report by Trooper S.M. Nickel.
The accident left him with massive head injuries and he was taken to Tampa General Hospital. On May 19, East Bay High School administrators announced Ballenger’s death to students after the young athlete was taken off life support, said Scot Tipton East Bay High School athletic director.
On May 23, a memorial was arranged for Rex Lee Ballenger Jr., at Vance V. Vogel Park in Gibsonton just one day after two letters from colleges came to the Ballenger home pleased to tell Rex he had been accepted for the fall semester.
“He was one of the toughest individuals, pound for pound, I have coached,” said Brian Thorton who has been coaching football at East Bay High for the last 15 years and made Ballenger his starting quarterback three years ago.
Due to his size, the 5 ft., 9 in. quarterback was not what colleges want for their athletic program. But, according to Thorton, during a conference after the school was notified of the senior’s death, this was not the reason why Ballenger played the game.
“He wasn’t playing football to win a scholarship,” Thornton said. “I wish more athletes played like that.”
Ballenger’s No.10 Jersey was worn by his best friend and team mate Chaz Burrows during the recent spring football jamboree at Brandon High but Thorton is seeking to retire Ballenger’s jersey for good in honor of the player.
Besides his parents, Ballenger is survived by siblings John Watson, 21, and Jennifer Watson, 24.
