Many SouthShore residents eagerly anticipated the opening of the new Big Lots store in October. Maybe it’s the thrill of the hunt or the satisfaction of finding that certain item at a discount rate. But whatever the reason, Big Lots holds firm to its advertising slogan – “Helping people connect with their inner bargain hunter.” The large discount retail chain, Big Lots, opened its newest store, measuring 24,000 sq. ft., in the Sun Point Shopping Center located at 3048 East College Ave. in Ruskin. The grand opening ceremony drew large crowds of retail shoppers looking for big savings, especially in these tight economic times and with the holidays quickly approaching. During the opening ceremonies, Big Lots showed its support for the local community by presenting a $2,500 check to Lennard High School. Big Lots is known for its partnership within its communities, coordinating many charitable events including its partnership with Toys for Tots. Store Manager Ira Cohen was enthusiastic about the response from the community. “This is a great turn out, and we are excited that the store is finally open for business” said Cohen. Cohen, an Apollo Beach resident and a father of five children, has worked for Big Lots for six years and had previously worked at two different stores in the Tampa area. The opening of this new store was his first grand opening, and he marks it as an achievement. “We have 45 employees and everyone has worked tirelessly to make this grand opening happen successfully for the community,” said Cohen. Grace Payton, a Sun City Center resident, was shopping that morning at the new Big Lots store looking at the holiday decorations. “I have always loved Big Lots, and I used to drive all the way to the Big Lots in Brandon,” said Payton. “Now, I am thrilled to have this store right down the street.” The new store shelves were neatly stocked with a broad range of brand-name products, including consumables, seasonal items, furniture, housewares, toys, electronics, home décor, tools and gifts to attract any bargain hunting consumer. Founded in 1967, Big Lots is now considered the nation’s largest closeout retailer and operates over 1,400 retail stores, serving 47 states and employs more than 38,000 associates. For more information about Big Lots, please visit www.BigLots.com or you can call the new store directly at 641-7349.

The chamber is welcoming any residents who would like to start the spread of holiday cheer through the offering of their time. Volunteers are needed for the set-up of the event, the serving of food, the breakdown of the event and with the collecting of donations. If time is not on your side Thanksgiving Day, the chamber is also welcoming cash donations for tents, tables and chairs as well as food donations including bread, potatoes, green beans, cranberry, stuffing, turkeys and desserts. Paper or plastic table settings are in need as well. And on the other side of the spectrum, residents are also encouraged to mention the upcoming event to anyone in the SouthShore area who may be in need of a good meal. The first-time event is headed by committee members Morrison, Beth Howard of SouthShore Gallery, Tony Zipperer of Zipperer’s Funeral Home, Ron Simpson of Weichert Realtors – SouthShore, John Lawson of Hydro Harvest Farms and Debbie and Beanie (Don) Teachy of Beanie’s Family Sports Bar & Grill. Along with the contributions of the committee, local organizations such as the Ruskin Advisory Committee and the South Hillsborough Community Cupboard, a nonprofit in Ruskin, also plan to sponsor the event, while South Bay Hospital plans to donate 25 turkeys. “This is a wonderful way to reach out to these people who are right here in your very own community, to show them that you care. It’s a great lesson to teach your children to get involved and at the same time ‘be thankful’ of what they have,” exclaims Morrison, concluding, “On Thanksgiving Day it would give everyone something extra to be thankful for. It’s definitely a win-win for the entire community.” To make a donation, get involved or learn about the dinner, call the chamber at 645- 3808 or the center at 671-7647, ext 222.

Looking for a delicious, cool treat? Then head over to Rita’s Water Ice which opened recently in Riverview. With flavors of Italian ice, which are made with fresh fruit in the store ranging from green apple and raspberry lemonade to mango and lemon, old fashioned frozen custard and layered gelatin, the franchise, owned by Riverview residents Lucio and Marleny Rodriguez, has something for everyone.
Rita’s Water Ice Franchise Company, headquartered in Trevose, Pennsylvania, is the largest Italian ice concept in the nation and is currently operating in 17 states with more than 500 stores.
“Rita’s signature product is its Italian ice, often referred to as water ice, which is much smoother than a snow cone and combines ice with real fresh fruit; mixed onsite in batches and served within 36 hours,” says Rodriguez, who moved with Marleny from New Jersey two years ago. “Real fruit adds dramatically to the taste of the ice, which comes in over 30 different flavors.”
Rita’s also offers cream ice, Italian ice flavors that, according to Rodriguez, are as smooth and silky as ice cream, in different flavors.
Rita’s in Riverview is open Sunday through Thursday from 12 Noon-9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 12 Noon-10 p.m. The store is located at Summerfield Square, 13149 U.S. Hwy. 301 S. in Riverview.
Please call the store at 741-0ICE (0423) for directions or to learn the available flavors of the day.

According to Mundt, many residents living in communities with restrictions that do not allow storage of boats and RV use Storsafe.
Some of the features at Storsafe include 50 amp services, wash down areas, an air station and a RV dump station. The entire 20-acre facility is built to withstand hurricane strength winds and in addition to the RV and boat storage, the building offers climate controlled and non-climate controlled storage.
“We also provide the customers with moving boxes, locks and a free moving truck,” says Mundt. “We have 24/7 computerized access control for the customers and 24 hour video recorded surveillance, monthly specials, military discounts and senior citizen discount.”
Storsafe is located at 12704 S. U.S. Hwy. in Gibsonton and can be reached at 341-STOR(7867). For more information, visit www.storsafeselfstorage.com.

South Bay Installs Mammography Unit
South Bay Hospital is pleased to announce the installation of a new digital mammography unit at the South Bay Hospital Outpatient Diagnostic and Rehab Center. Digital mammography produces a higher quality image than traditional mammography, during a shorter exam time for the patient.
The image produced by the digital mammography unit is a high resolution image that can be enhanced and manipulated. This means that the physician can zoom in on questionable areas and make adjustments to the image. This technology expands the ability to detect abnormalities and breast cancer in more women.
Digital mammography also allows for less time in the exam room and less time waiting on results. Since the image is instantly transferred to a computer, there is no longer the need to wait on film development. This means patients are able to get their results sooner.
“Waiting for mammography results can be very stressful,” says hospital CNO and breast cancer survivor Terrie Jefferson, RN. “Reducing that wait time for our patients while producing a higher quality image for diagnosis can help ease some of that anxiety.”
For more information about digital mammography, contact Melissa Morgan at 634-0496, or to schedule a digital mammography, call 642-8468.

Festival visitors can enjoy eating the fresh seafood while listening to live musical performances on the main stage, showcasing an array of musical styles including jazz, reggae, pop, blues, country and gospel. Many local bands will be performing, including T-Blue and Off The Cuff. There will also be “strolling” performers throughout the weekend.
A popular choice for festival-goers is the boat show that promises an extravaganza of powerboats, pleasure boats, flat boats, bass boats, cruisers and nautical accessories to appeal to any boat lover.
Keeping true to the tradition of the event, various artists and craftsman will be displaying and selling their handiwork. A new addition to the marketplace this year is an “upscale” craft section. Other exhibits include educational and wellness displays, commercial exhibits and environmental and wildlife exhibits.
New to the festival this year is the “Paws”-ability area that will showcase local vendors that specialize in pet services. Croc Encounters, Lowry Park Zoo and Sarasota’s Mote Marine will all be participating in this new animal section.
“Also new this year, the 2009 Honorary Mayor of Ruskin will be announced at the main stage on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.,” said Morrison.
The event will also host a popular children’s area where kids can be entertained for hours playing on inflatable rides, games, activities and interactive live entertainment that includes magicians, jugglers and clowns. There will also be a Kids’ Costume Contest on Saturday at 2 p.m. on the main stage; parents may register on the festival Website or in person by 1 p.m. on Saturday before the contest.

There has been a recent outpouring of support from the community for the East Bay High School student who was attacked at Bloomingdale Library in April.
Recently, a benefit was held at the Ruskin VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), located at 5120 U.S. Hwy. 41 N. in Ruskin raising more than $17,000 of much needed funds for the student who now requires $30,000 per month in rehabilitation costs
In Valrico, Bleu Salon will open its doors on a Monday when it is typically closed and donate all funds for services to the girl’s fund. On Monday, September 29, 12 Noon-5 p.m., all haircuts, blow dry and style, mini manicures and mini pedicures, 15-minute massages and waxing will be for donations to the fund. Bleu is located at the Lithia Crossings Stein Mart anchored plaza at 3472 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. Call 651-4020 or visit www.bleusalonandspa.com.
This is not the first time that Bleu Salon has given back in August of 2007 they held an event called Hairdresser Unlocking Hope. A total of $2,665 was raised for those still in need from Hurricane Katrina.
In 2005 and 2006, the salon sponsored local participants in the Susan G. Women 3 day walk for Breast Cancer and donated $3,024 (in 2006) and $2,975 (in 2005). Bleu Salon has also donated to the Emergency Care Help Organization (ECHO). Back in 2005, the entire salon and clients donated 800 cans of food for those in need at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
At the Ruskin event, there was food, music, and beverages. The cost was $10 per family at the door or $5 per person. Additional donations were also accepted; for a donation of $10 or more, people could sign an eight-foot banner for her.
Melanie Morrison, the executive director for the Ruskin Chamber of Commerce, who along with a small committee comprised of Denise Reiter, Shirley May, Tony Zipperer, Stacy Self and Kelly Reedy, organized the event in less than two weeks, she said. She enlisted the help of some of the girl’s friends.
The event raised a total of $20,000, with the Wal-Mart on Bloomingdale Ave. having donated $1,000 prior to the event, and the Brandon Foundation committed to donating $2,000. The night of the event, Morrison said, they raised $17,000 in cash.
“We never dreamed it would be that great,” she said. She had volunteered for the Ruskin Relay for Life in April of 2008, approximately two weeks before her attack, Morrison said. She had also volunteered the year before at the Ruskin Seafood Festival in November of 2007. “So it had extra meaning,” Morrison said.
The 18-year-old girl, who was blinded in the April attack and can’t walk or swallow, is undergoing rehabilitation in Sarasota. The girl was about to graduate from East Bay and had a full scholarship to the University of Florida. Morrison said the girl’s sister told them that the girl and her mother watched the event on television from their room.
Her care costs $30,000 a month and Medicaid recently notified the girl’s family that it would only pay for her medical care until August 15.
The girl’s 16-year-old assailant, Kendrick Morris, has been arrested and charged with kidnapping, aggravated and sexual battery. He has pled guilty and is awaiting trial in Orient Road Jail.
For more information, call Morrison at 645-3808 or send an e-mail to ruskinchamber@earthlink.net.
For those who did not make the event, but still wish to contribute, a fund has been set-up for the teenager at SunTrust Bank. To contribute, go to any SunTrust Bank branch and request the money go to the Bloomingdale Library Assault Fund.
Other events are being planned across the community with all funds going directly to the care of the girl, whose name and identity has remained private.

Although the name Cockroach Bay might not immediately seem like a place that you’d want to visit, it’s a haven for Florida sea life and serenity. Captain Gus Muench is passionate about persuading support in the community to protect this area by establishing an official “Cockroach Bay Sanctuary Authority.”
“I lived in the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve for 38 years as a commercial fisherman, and when I look back, I realize that I was only interested in taking its rich and natural resources,” says Muench.
Muench petitioned the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission as well as the Hillsborough County Planning Commission and the Southwest Florida Water Management District to consider his proposal to establish an official sanctuary authority for Cockroach Bay.
His proposal includes instituting an official authority to govern and protect a proposed access corridor through Little Cockroach Bay from the Little Manatee River. The area outside the corridor and within the existing Manatee Protection Area would become a “Pole and Troll” zone.
The “Pole and Troll,” or no-motor zone, has stirred controversy among weekend boaters, but environmentalists consider it the principal way to protect sea grasses from propeller damage.
Muench thinks educating people about sea grass damage is a beginning, but not enough. “We need to establish an official authority that people respect,” said Muench. “And if the area is established as an official sanctuary, then that also allows us to look at grants and state funding.”
The Hillsborough County Planning Commission hosted a community planning workshop in Ruskin at the SouthShore Regional Library in late July to discuss the plan. “The community plan can include support strategies that emphasize the importance of the area and the desires of the community,” says Pedro Parra, principal planner with the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission.
“With more boaters moving into the area, we have to do something soon,” said Muench.
If you are interested in learning more about supporting the Cockroach Bay Sanctuary, please visit Muench’s Website at www.crabbyadventures.com or call 645-6578.

On Monday, September 29, 12-5 p.m., all hair cuts, mini manicures and pedicures, 15-minute massages and waxing will be for donations to the fund. Bleu is located at the Lithia Crossings Stein Mart anchored plaza at 3472 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. Call 651-4020 or visit www.bleusalonandspa.com.
Morrison said anywhere between 1,000-1,100 people were served spaghetti dinners at $5 a plate. The spaghetti was prepared by Bernie’s Sports Bar. Other food items were donated by Sisco, Apollo Meats, The Island Bar & Grill and Olive Garden in Brandon. John Lawson, of Hydro Harvest Farms in Ruskin, donated, made and distributed 300 strawberry shortcakes. Morrison said they were “very popular.” Chick-fil-A also donated assorted desserts and tea for the event. Coca-Cola donated 30 cases of soda for the event and the VFW rented out its building for no charge for this event.
“At one point, we ran out of food,” Morrison said. “Pizza Hut in Sun City Center called and brought enough food for 200 more people.”

By Kate Quesada
Bibzees Fashion bibsBibzees is a home-based online baby boutique started by local Mom, Beth Powell. She had a second baby with a drool problem and reflux; he was constantly donning a bib. “The problem was I had quite the trendy wardrobe for him and was covering up his little graphic tees and onesies with pastel blue and green bibs that said ‘I Love Daddy’,” said Powell continuing, “I began a hunt for trendy bibs and couldn’t find any that would work with his outfits.”Powell said she felt like she was sitting on this great idea and that she needed to follow through with it. She started purchasing baby blank products to find a good quality bib and onesie. Next, Powell found a dye company in the Los Angeles garment district to dye and vintage wash the product. Then, she set out to find a screen printer that would use water based inks that were safe for the baby and the environment. “Finally,” she said “And the fun part, I came up with some trendy designs to put on my bibs. Thus Bibzees was born early 2008.” The great part about Bibzees is that they come as a set, with one bodysuit and two coordinating bibs. For example if you order Surfer Dude, you get a custom dyed blue bodysuit and two blue bibs, one with a surfer and one with a shark. Bibzees carries 3 piece bodysuit and bib sets and has just added Toddler Tees for 12 to 18 month olds. Powell’s latest designs, “Baby Ink” are tattoo designs. The current products range from $13.50 to $26.95 (excluding tax). Powell has lived in Brandon, Riverview, Tampa and is moving a few miles back to Brandon in September. For more information visit Powell’s Website, www.bibzees.com. They loved all of the attention and their owners enjoyed watching someone else give their pups a bath. The owners were great, too.

In the words of the builder of the world’s largest playgrounds, Walt Disney, “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” Bayou Pass Village found itself with one big problem: a lot of children and no playground. With that in mind, it got to work. The residents of Bayou Pass worked eight months to raise money to purchase playground equipment for the community’s children. Neighbors held fundraisers, cookouts, community yard sales and movie nights where they sold popcorn. With the help of Florida Home Partnership, the Community Foundation of Sun City Center and The Home Depot, they reached their $30,000 goal for their new playground.Bayou Pass Village is a planned community of 230 houses that is designed for first-time homeowners with modest incomes. Families contributed 600 hours of “sweat equity” toward building their homes, and they took it upon themselves to build something special for everyone. They called the project Bayou Pass Playground Build-Up, but this project would culminate with more than just a playground, this would be a celebration. The event seemed more like a festival than a work day. The community celebrated with music, clowns, bounce-houses, a caricature artist, games, food, games and Tampa Bay Lightning cheerleaders. The First Apostolic Church from Ruskin grilled steak, chicken, hotdogs and hamburgers for the 100 volunteers who were building the new playground. The local Home Depot sent a team of 12 employees to take part in the build-up; Bryon Kintz, the receiving manager at the Sun City Center Home Depot, was the team captain for the build-up. “This is such a rewarding experience for us,” said Kintz. “We love giving back to the community.” Luan Nguyen, a Bayou Pass Village resident, co-chaired the project with Melinda Dale from the Florida Home Partnership. Nguyen assisted in deciding the scope of the playground project, which includes a shelter, picnic tables and benches as well as a large playground.Nguyen and his 7-year-old son Alex were sweaty but excited at the build-up, having looked forward to the day for months. “This is a culmination of all our hard work,” he said.Dale, who facilitated the build-up celebration event, was happy with the enormous turnout. “This is definitely a labor of love by the residents and the whole community,” she said. “They all should be very proud about their accomplishment.”The residents may now also claim that “sweat equity” built their community playground which the children will benefit from for years to come. For more information about the Bayou Pass Village, please visit the Florida Home Partnership Website at www.FLHOME.org or call 672-7860.Photo Caption: Team Depot from Sun City Center helps build the new playground at Bayou Pass Village.
