Members Of Brandon League Of Fine Arts Exhibit Their Artwork
By Kathy Collins
The Brandon League of Fine Arts (BLFA) has been actively promoting the arts and area artists for over 50 years. In May, BLFA held a reception to celebrate the Members’ Show, an exhibit of members’ artwork which is on display at Center Place through the month of May. Thirty-five members of BLFA submitted their best new pieces. The exhibit was judged by nationally renowned artist Heidi Presse. Of the artwork judged, Presse said, “I liked that this show had a diverse grouping of techniques and mediums. It makes for an interesting show.” Members’ Show Director Sue Allen said, “Heidi brings a high level of expertise to our Members’ Show. We are proud and pleased that she is sharing her time and talent with BLFA.Virginia Rahn won Best in Show with her composition (painting) of broken eggs. Other winners included Anne Drewry, Kathy Durdin, Marsha Nelson, Tim Mandese, Ruth Soucel, Felix Velazquez, Minnette Webster and Dick Evans. It should be noted that while the show was judged, it was not a juried show.  A juried show is one where a judge (or panel of judges) selects which pieces will be shown in the show and then only those chosen are judged. Here, all pieces submitted were shown and judged.BLFA’s next event is Artworks 2010, which will be held in September. This is an open show and anyone can submit a piece of artwork for the show. The deadline for submission is the end of August. Information on submission will be available on BLFA’s Website (www.blfa.us) in August.BLFA has 60 members hailing from all over the area, including Riverview, Dover, Seffner, Temple Terrace and Sun City. BLFA meets the third Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at Center Place, located at 619 Vonderburg Dr., Ste. B, in Brandon. BLFA is a great place for artists to network. Members will not only share tips on where to get supplies, but they also engage in lively discussions about the arts. Each meeting also includes a demonstration by an artist. All meetings are open to the public. If you would like more information about the Brandon League of Fine Arts, please contact current president Tim Mandese at 716-4035 or mmustangg@yahoo.com.
