The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets promotes leadership, responsibility and a sense of duty to country for youths aged 11-17. The members are able to experience real military training while gaining confidence, strength and maturity. The organization gives these young people unforgettable experiences and important training that can result in scholarships as well as entering the military with earned rank. These are our future heroes and the U.S. Sea Cadets gives them an amazing start to their future.

The Tampa Bay chapter of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets is having a fundraising golf scramble at Summerfield Crossing Golf Club in Riverview.  The Sea Cadets are funded by the U.S. Navy and due to sequestration, much of its funding has been cut, making this tournament an important opportunity to raise money for cadet activities during the year.

The Cadets currently drill one weekend a month, just as any military Reserve unit does. During the year, they attend trainings that will build their confidence and give them new skills such as Survival and Field and Medical training.

Golfers and sponsors are needed to make this event a success.  The scramble kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 21 and includes 18 holes of golf, cart and an Italian buffet lunch afterward.  The price per golfer is just $75.  Information on how to sign up as a player for the tournament as well as sponsorship opportunities can be found on the Facebook page, Tampa Bay Sea Cadet Golf Tournament. Spirit Airlines and Southwest Airlines have signed up as sponsors, each offering two round-trip airline tickets that will be raffled during the lunch.

Lithia resident Katie Thompson’s son, Clayton, joined the Cadets in January and she is proud of what he has already accomplished.  “Seamanship, physical fitness and discipline are just a few things he is learning. It is fostering his patriotism and is recognizing the sacrifices others have made for our country,” she said.
