Why color eggs when you can be the egg? Bring the family and enjoy a lot of fun while helping to raise money for charity.

A 5K and Fun Run/Walk Family Fun EGGstravangza will take place on Saturday, April 19 beginning at 8 a.m. at Newsome High School, located at 16550 FishHawk Blvd. in Lithia.

Seeds of Hope, Inc. is partnering with the Do Something Club at Newsome High School. Allison Kaslow, a Newsome senior, has taken the lead and is organizing the sponsors and the volunteers. Seeds of Hope’s Leda Eaton said, “It’s a great way for the students to see up close what it’s like to be a part of a charity event that supports the cause.”

The race will take place behind Newsome on a cross-country course in the grassy areas. Everyone is welcome, but strollers will need to be “off-road” friendly.

Six color stations along the course are meant to douse participants in a variety of spring-like festive colors. Plenty of marked shortcuts will be available if you are not up for a full 5K or want to run with small children. Wear as much white as possible. The T-shirts will have an egg on them, so by the end of the race, participants can leave as a colored egg.

This race is strictly a fun event; it’s not a timed goal, only to be completely covered in color by the end.

Jake Dela Cruz will get the after-party started with a dance theme at the end of the race. Pictures with the Easter Bunny mascot will be available and there will be giveaways. Proceeds will benefit Seeds of Hope’s efforts to relieve hunger locally. The hope is to provide backpacks of food on that weekend for school children who qualify for free lunch. Stowers Elementary has 25 families to add to Seeds of Hope’s current weekly backpack total of 57. The backpacks are meant to help the whole family not just the student. Each backpack costs $10 per week. For more information on Seeds of Hope, visit www.sohopefl.org.
