color your egg run 2Why color eggs when you can be the egg? Bring the family and enjoy a lot of fun while helping to raise money for charity.

A 5K and Fun Run/Walk Family Fun EGGstravangza will take place on Saturday, April 4 beginning at 8 a.m. at Newsome High School, located at 16550 FishHawk Blvd. in Lithia.

The race will take place behind Newsome on a cross-country course in the grassy areas. Everyone is welcome, but strollers will need to be “off-road” friendly.

Six color stations along the course are meant to douse participants in a variety of spring-like festive colors. Plenty of marked shortcuts will be available for those who are not up for a full 5K or want to run with small children. A shortened course will be about one mile. Wear as much white as possible. The T-shirts will have an egg on them, so by the end of the race, participants can leave as a colored egg.

Coordinated by the NHS and RMS Seeds of Hope Clubs, the students learn about managing and coordinating an event that supports a charity; giving them a good overview of what it takes, and can then enjoy the success of their efforts. Proceeds will benefit the Clubs’ efforts to relieve hunger locally. Seeds of Hope’s Leda Eaton said, Allison Kaslow (who is now at MIT) was my first student lead – she was awesome. Connie and Austin have been equally good.  It’s nice to give the students the power to make it a success and a color run is something people naturally will support. Now that there are Seeds of Hope Clubs at RMS and NHS it’s important that the students come up with ideas to generate money to support the food relief efforts that we do.  I think this is a real way they can do that and get real world experience.”

This race is strictly a fun event; it’s not a timed goal, only to be completely covered in color by the end. “It’s a race that doesn’t necessarily celebrate the person who finishes first, but the racers who finish with the most color,” commented Eaton.

There will be a DJ to get the after-party started with a dance theme at the end of the race. Pictures with the Easter Bunny mascot will be available with an egg hunt after the race. There will be plenty of giveaways and egg toss teams will receive prizes.

Registration costs $25 and includes a white Color “Your Egg” Run T-shirt, race number and one personal color packet. Children under 5 are free with a paying adult. Packet pickup will take place on Friday, April 3 from 4-8 p.m. at Newsome High School.
