Budding musicians will have a new place to get their start this month when Family Music Connection begins offering classes at Kidtopia in Lithia.

The mixed-age classes, taught by Family Music Connection Director Tausha Honey, will introduce children from birth to five years old to music using the popular Music Together curriculum.

“There are lots of group activities for kids out there, but Music Together offers a true family music class for the youngest infant to the oldest great-grandparent and everyone in between,” said Honey, who also teaches music at Colleen Bevis Elementary School in Lithia. “I have always been passionate about early childhood music and movement as well as the importance of families connecting with one another through common interests. Music Together classes offer the perfect marriage of these two passions.”

The Spring semester classes will start on Saturday, April 7 and will include eight weekly sessions of 45 minutes each. According to Honey, the classes will be led in singing, dancing and playing songs ranging from lullabies to boisterous jams using child-friendly percussion instruments. Registered families receive an illustrated song book, music CD/download code and other print and online resources to continue the music-making at home or in the car.

“There is no previous musical experience required, just a willingness to get down on the floor and get silly with your child,” said Honey, a Valrico resident with three young boys of her own.

Music Together, which started introducing children to music in 1987, is based on the recognition that all children are musical and can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat and participate with confidence.
Family Music Connection classes will take place at Kidtopia, an indoor play space and tutoring center which recently opened its doors on FishHawk Blvd.

“The music classes are a great fit at Kidtopia because we are all about play, party and learn,” said Kidtopia Owner, Susan Clark. “The curriculum Music Together offers is a perfect avenue for kids to learn and explore music.”
