Members of the Newsome High School Booster Club are asking area residents, businesses, parents and local high school sports fans to put on their running shoes and take part in the club’s first annual 5K run.
According to club president Kathy Gregory, the event scheduled for Saturday, October 13, is organized and sponsored by the Newsome Athletic Booster Club to raise funds on behalf of its athletes. “It is getting more and more difficult to provide for and cover the necessary supplies and gear,” Gregory said.
“We hope that this event, which we would like to see continue for years to come, will help. It is all for the benefit of our hard-working student athletes.” Gregory explained that the upcoming 5K is to start at 8 a.m. on the Newsome High School student parking lot, located at 16550 FishHawk Blvd. in Lithia, and will remain in the proximity of the school.
The Newsome Athletic Booster Club is a not for profit organization that is dedicated to raise funds for student athletes and student programs at Newsome High School in Lithia.
The Boosters support and provide scholarships for qualifying athletes for all of the 22 sports currently played at Newsome. Funds are distributed so each sport has the opportunity to obtain equipment, instruction, tournament participation, uniforms, practice gear and other essentials necessary to flourish and participate competitively in Hillsborough County and state-sponsored events safely.
Gregory emphasized that the club’s primary source of income is its membership, which also includes business sponsorships.
Residents and businesses can support the Newsome Booster Club and local athletes by becoming members, with membership choices from a $50 “Batter Up” membership all the way to “Hole-in-One” or “End Zone” membership of $1,000 or $3,000, respectively. Participants may register online or on race day. Preregistration is $20 and $25 on race day per person.
Registration opens at 7 a.m. All participants registered by Wednesday, October 3, will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag day of race. For more information about the Newsome Athletic Booster Club, please visit www.nhsboosters.com.
