Entering the 2012-2013 winter season seventh in the country, the Brandon Eagles wrestling team, led by coach Russ Cozart, is once again on track to confirm the program’s dominance of the sport by over-powering the competition in all weight class.

Hosted by the Cougars at Durant High School, Brandon showed its strength during the Hillsborough County Division Duals Championships against Bloomingdale, Riverview, Newsome, East Bay, Spoto, Lennard, Plant City and Durant.

With the results posted on the Eagles home page which showed BHS 81 Plant City 0, BHS 81 Newsome 0, BHS 79 Durant 0, BHS 81 Spoto 0, BHS 71 Riverview 3, BHS 76 Lennard 0, BHS 74 East Bay 0 and BHS 78 Bloomingdale 0, there is little doubt about the program’s continued superiority, respected by neighboring coaches, athletes and wrestling fans alike.

The win at Durant came in the wake of Brandon’s 655 point victory at the 11th Annual Jim Graves Invitational a week earlier, hosted annually by the Eagles, as they outscored second-place Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (422) to win the tourney for the 10th time.

The Eagles program boasts of  many young but talented wrestlers, among them a number of experienced athletes returning from last seasons’ successful campaigns even as the current season itself welcomes back Cozart to his 37th year at Brandon, in hopes of expanding the schools’ state championships winning streak to 13.

Referring to the programs current top ranking, Cozart spoke highly of his team, confident of another state title.

“We have a young, but good team again this year,” Cozart said.
