southshore-logoInsurance agent Michelle Mosher recently opened an independent insurance agency in Brandon after 20 years of experience in the industry. Mosher decided to establish her own agency where she is able to provide coverage through multiple outlets. Her company, SouthShore Insurance Professionals, L.L.C., has a direct contract to write policies with a minimum of 25 insurance companies covering personal and commercial property and casualty insurance in the state of Florida.

The decision to venture out on her own came inherently to Mosher this past March, after a purchase opportunity didn’t work out at a previous agency where she worked for two years. Some of her new agency’s first clients were seeking health insurance due to the deadlines set forth by the Affordable Care Act.

“It was the end of open enrollment, so my first policy was for health,” she said.

Although leaving the comfort of a corporate paycheck can be nerve-wracking, Mosher admits that business has been steadily increasing since writing her initial policies in March. But her vision is greater than simply increasing the bottom line.

“My focus is on education,” Mosher said. “You know, you buy a piece of paper. So, my goal is to make sure that my clients understand what they purchased. It doesn’t matter until it matters, and then it’s too late.”

Those ill-fated stories abound in Florida, especially when it comes to being prepared for volatile weather conditions.

“That’s not the time you want to find out that the policy you bought isn’t going to do what you need it to do,” she said.

Mosher specified that relationships are important when advising clients regarding insurance needs. That sort of personal connection comes with the service of an independent agent like Mosher. Whenever a change occurs, a client may need to adjust their policy and increase coverage which makes her “the bearer of truth” at times.

“I know when somebody walks out of here they are insured properly,” she said.

Mosher maintains involvement in the community as a member of several networking and relationship-building groups in southern Hillsborough County and serves on the Board of Directors with both the Riverview Chamber of Commerce and the Specialty Insurance Agents of Florida.
