Maj. Richard J. ‘Dick’ Meadows remains one of the most respected figures in the history of U.S. Army Special Forces. A pioneer of the Regiment, he served in Korea, volunteered for the newly formed Special Forces in 1953, later served with MACV-SOG during the Vietnam War, led the assault force during the historic Son Tay Prison Raid and helped establish 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta following his retirement. In recognition of his extraordinary service, Special Forces Association Chapter LX named its annual scholarship in his honor to inspire future generations to pursue lives of achievement, character and service.

Members of Special Forces Association Chapter LX gathered at Team House Tampa on August 1 for the annual Richard J. Meadows Memorial Scholarship Awards Banquet. Scholarship recipients, their families, chapter members and distinguished guests, including Congressman Gus M. Bilirakis, celebrated students whose accomplishments reflect the scholarship’s emphasis on academic excellence, leadership, perseverance, and service.

Following dinner, chapter members and guests gathered for the formal scholarship presentation ceremony, where each recipient was recognized for his or her accomplishments and future aspirations. The ceremony reflected Chapter LX’s continuing commitment to investing in future generations through education and mentorship. This year’s recipients represent three different educational paths while sharing a common commitment to excellence.

Ryland Zilka will attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he plans to study electrical engineering.

Brittany Badertscher will pursue a master’s degree in special education at Florida Atlantic University as she prepares for a career serving students with special educational needs.

Ethan D’India will continue his education through the Project ACCESS Program at the College of the Florida Keys, where he will further develop the academic, vocational and independent living skills needed to achieve his personal goals.

The evening’s keynote speaker was Bilirakis, who has represented Florida’s 12th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives since 2007. Throughout his congressional service, he has been a strong advocate for veterans, active-duty service members, military families and educational opportunities.

During his remarks, Bilirakis spoke of our nation’s enduring debt of gratitude to its veterans, recognizing that the freedoms Americans enjoy today have been secured through the sacrifices of generations of men and women who answered the call to serve. He observed that veteran organizations such as Special Forces Association Chapter LX continue to honor that legacy not only by supporting veterans and their families in times of need but also by investing in the next generation through the Richard J. Meadows Memorial Scholarship Program. Congratulating the scholarship recipients, he encouraged them to pursue lives of excellence, leadership and service, noting that programs such as this ensure that the values exemplified by Meadows continue to inspire future generations.

The annual Richard J. Meadows Memorial Scholarship Awards Banquet continues to honor one of the regiment’s legendary pioneers while providing meaningful educational opportunities for deserving students. Through this program, Special Forces Association Chapter LX demonstrates that its tradition of service extends beyond military service by investing in the leaders of tomorrow.
