At its first Nursing Gala held in April, Brandon Regional Hospital honored Nurse of the Year, Joyce Sankey and Physician of the Year, Donovan Tapper, M.D. The event was designed to recognize the significant accomplishments that Brandon Regional Hospital’s nurses and medical staff have made. Both Sankey and Tapper were chosen for their dedication to patients and for the dedication to helping Brandon Regional Hospital fulfill its vision of being the destination of exceptional care.

Sankey is a charge nurse in Labor and Delivery and has been with the hospital since she became a nurse in March 1985.

Tapper, a resident of FishHawk, is a board certified general surgeon who has been with Brandon Regional Hospital since 2012. Tapper served in the U.S. Air Force for 26 years. Tapper said, “It is very humbling to win this award. The honor is that much more appreciated because of the input from the nurses.”

According to Chris Taramasco, Brandon Regional Hospital’s chief nursing officer, “Individuals were nominated for their demonstration of the Brandon Values (accountability, safety, integrity, collaboration and compassion) which guide our work to accomplish our mission of providing our patients with quality care through innovation, education and compassionate care. Nurses were nominated by physicians and physicians were nominated by nurses.”

As examples, Taramasco stated, “One of the nomination forms for nurse Sankey stated: Provides excellent leadership and mentorship to the new nurses. Shows sound judgment among a very busy OB/L&D unit to provide stability in critical situations. She is compassionate, hardworking, wants the best for her patients, the hospital and team.”

Taramasco added, “One of the nomination entries for Dr. Tapper stated: He provides meticulous care of patients throughout his surgical skills and devoted follow up. Collaborates with the nursing staff to ensure highest level of professionalism. A team member who demonstrates sincere compassion toward patients and family.”
