Photographer Ansel Adams once said, “A great photograph is full of expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is thereby a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety.” Melissa Hurst, of Melissa Hurst Photography, feels that photographs can be turned into works of art. Hurst is a natural light photographer and her style is editorial and modern, but with a vintage twist.

“I love the look of classic photos from the Victorian Era to the 1930’s,” Hurst said, “I also think fashion and nature are a big influence on my style as well.”

Hurst is a Brandon resident who started doing photography in high school. “I started off photographing architecture and nature,” Hurst said. A few years later, she got her first DSLR camera and discovered her passion for portraiture. She enjoys photographing children, families and individuals. She said she likes capturing the emotions of her clients because it gives them beautiful portraits to display for years to come. Hurst recently started a blog for her website that describes the photo sessions with her clients as well as posting some of the photos from the shoots, so future clients can get ideas for photos and get an example of Hurst’s style of photography.

“I love it because I can tell a little story about each session I do as well as being able to display several photos from the session,” Hurst said. Her future plans are to open her own studio but she still will continue to do location shoots. Most of Hurst’s location shoots take place just before sunset because she feels that is the best time of day for natural light.
“I love natural light and the beauty of outdoor settings,” Hurst said, “It’s a beautiful contrast for someone to be dressed up while doing a shoot in a field or the beach.”
