The February art exhibit at the Bruton Memorial Library in historic downtown Plant City is a fabulous collection of paintings created by long time Plant City resident, Lurline Tanner. The exhibit is available for viewing during the normal operating hours of the Bruton Memorial Library.

Tanner’s exhibit features eight large scale acrylic paintings. Tanner selected paintings are of the Hillsborough River, her grandfather’s homestead, magnolias, Abrahams Falls, her grandson, Wesley Tanner, the Smoky Mountains Falls, Lake Pierce and a Tennessee cabin.
Her style brings out striking details in each painting. One that really demonstrates her technique features a magnolia flower. You can literally see every detail of the flower. The painting consists of an initial blossom, a partial blossom and the full flower which even depicts the stamen that have recently fallen off of the flower.

Tanner’s excellent use of color really draws the viewer into the paintings.

Amanda LaPorta, Adult Services Librarian for the Bruton Memorial Library said of Tanner’s paintings and the exhibit, “Lurline Tanner is a Plant City local who has placed on display a series of eight acrylic paintings. Her primary focus is nature and local vistas.” LaPorta added, “The pieces are bright, colorful and crisp. They possess a Kinkadian quality that blends the beauty of nature with a sense of nostalgia.”

Tanner grew up in the area and attended Plant City schools. Works of art such as these are treasures that are best put on display for all to see. The exhibit will be up through the end of February, so take a moment to stop in and soak up the bright, fantastic colors and wonderful views. You might just end up feeling just a bit nostalgic.

Each month, the art wall at the Bruton Memorial Library features the artwork of a talented East Hillsborough artist or the collective works of an arts organization.
