Putting a new twist on an old message, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Outreach Division held a news conference today (7/30) at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Operations Center, 2008 East 8th Ave in Ybor City. Led by Major Chad Chronister the event presented the Sheriff’s new public safety announcement on how to help eliminate the problem with unlocked car doors, open garage doors and cars left running and unattended.

Hillsborough County statistics for vehicle burglary over the past five years reveal the intensity of the issue:

2011: 2, 873

2012: 2, 354

2013: 2, 182

2014: 2, 769

2015 (YTD): 1,500

“Throughout the Tampa Bay area, thieves love it when you make it easy for them to steal your valuables, and these type of crimes are some of the most preventable crimes,” Chronister said. A new public safety video, called “Thankful Thieves,” as well as other videos and supporting material were presented to the media for distribution to the public in an effort to prevent such crimes, while unveiling the Sheriff’s Office initiative.
