Back-to-school Safety: Slow Down And Stay Alert
Hillsborough County students headed back to school on August 10, which means our roads are once again filled with school buses, parents, and children traveling to and from school.
As drivers, we all have an important role in keeping our students safe. When a school bus stops and its red lights are flashing and stop arm is extended, stop and remain stopped. Children may be entering or exiting the bus and can be difficult to see. Never attempt to pass a stopped school bus.
Please also pay close attention in school zones. When the yellow beacon is flashing, slow down, stay alert and watch carefully for students crossing the road, walking near traffic or riding bicycles.
With school back in session, traffic will be heavier, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Give yourself extra time, avoid distractions and be patient. A few extra minutes on your commute is a small price to pay for keeping a child safe.
Let’s make this school year a safe one for everyone. Slow down, stay alert and remember that getting there safely is more important than getting there quickly.
