You may have noticed a rise in superhero movies in the theaters in recent years. These movies offer entertainment, but also the idea of hope and possibility. But Tampa area residents do not need to watch movies to find a hero. Tampa residents are surrounded by heroes that sacrifice their lives daily for others. Some are first responders such as firefighters, paramedics and police officers; some are officers of the military; some are school teachers. The heroes that live among us serve anywhere from the local library to the trenches in foreign lands giving Tampa residents and American citizens the ability to live in freedom, to survive a severe auto accident or house fire giving them a chance to live another day, to receive an education with the possibility to become anything they dream.
Don Murray, owner of Don’s Bay Area Painting, set out to find a local hero in the Tampa community who was in need of having his or her house painted, but without the means to get it done. His search for a hero led him to Major Joseph Brod, USAF, Retired, who served in the United States Air Force for 20 years and then retired. In his retirement, Brod followed his genuine heart of service as a Physics teacher at Bloomingdale High School in Hillsborough County for the past 23 years. As a way to give recognition and to say “Thank you for your service” to all the local heroes we have in the Tampa area, Don’s Bay Area Painting painted Brod’s home entirely for free, partnered with PPG Porter Paint who provided the paint used to paint the home.
Brod responded to Murray’s generosity, “It felt so good to know that there are people who wanted to thank us for our service.”
