“On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States of America,” said Walt Raysick, President of the Veterans Affairs Council of Hillsborough County.
The first Veterans Day, held on November 11, 1919, was originally known as Armistice Day. It commemorated the signing of the treaty that effectively ended World War I. The treaty was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. “When it became apparent that wars were not a thing of the past, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices our service members have made all over the war,” explained Raysick.
This year’s Veterans Day, November 11, 2011, is significant. 2011 marks 10 years since the United States was attacked on September 11, 2001, and it marks 10 years since the commencement of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Groups and organizations will host events throughout the area to commemorate this year’s Veterans Day.
