Earlier this month, Kingswood Elementary School teacher Sue Creekmore was surprised and honored to learn that she is one of five finalists for the Teacher of the Year Award.

Students, teachers and staff alike were stunned to see Ronald McDonald and Raymond, of the Tampa Bay Rays, walk down the hallways of Kingswood Elementary School earlier this month.

Ronald and Raymond waved to curious onlookers as the two icons and representatives from the Hillsborough Education Foundation surprised fourth grade teacher Sue Creekmore with the news that she is one of five finalists for the Teacher of the Year Award, one of three categories apart of the 2012 Education in Excellence Awards, presented by the Verizon Foundation.

Creekmore, a teacher for 34 years, and was shocked when she was presented with the framed award marking her as a finalist for 2012 Teacher of the Year. As her students and fellow colleagues clapped and cheered, Creekmore said, “I had no idea. I couldn’t be more flattered.”

Amber Statham, principal of Kingswood Elementary, said, “Sue is a wonderful teacher. She is constantly working to make a difference in her student’s lives. She is always pushing them forward and wants what is best for them.”

Creekmore’s willingness work hard and go the extra mile for her students is exactly what makes her stand out as one of the best of the best teacher’s in Hillsborough County. When praised for all of her efforts, though, Creekmore shrugged it off and pointed to her students, “These are the best of the best right here.”
