As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you have items such as an old piece of furniture that has seen better days, bring it to Hallie Selgert and Ginger Baker, of Classique, and they will transform your “junk” into your next family heirloom. Classique specializes in refinishing and repurposing vintage furniture and other items.

Selgert, a resident of Brandon, and Baker, a resident of Apollo Beach, are two working moms who are living their dream. They both got into this business because they have a passion for all things vintage.

Selgert said, “The best part of this business is that I can be creative and can turn something neglected into a thing of beauty.” Baker added, “We want people to know that that old trunk can be a beautiful and unique piece of furniture, and it can be done at a reasonably good price.”

When you have work done by Selgert and Baker, you can be assured that they will give 110 percent to the work. “We take pride in our work. We like to think that the work we do is similar to the work of an old world cabinet maker,” said Baker. “It’s the hardest job we’ve ever done, but we love it,” said Selgert.

Selgert and Baker do their work in a warehouse, located at 1601 U.S. Hwy 41 in Ruskin. On Saturday, September 8, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., they will open their warehouse to the public for a sale. Baker said, “Over the past year, we have collected some amazing items that have been refinished and repurposed. We want to offer our treasures to the public.”

In addition to their Ruskin warehouse, Selgert and Baker are vendors at Lucky Day Emporium, located at 3322b Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Valrico. They are also retailers for a line of chalk and clay paint, CeCe Coldwell’s Paints. According to Baker, “This paint allows the DIYer to reinvent their treasure without the old headaches of stripping, sanding and dealing with toxic fumes.” This paint has no odor, emits no VOCs, is non-toxic and is extremely user-friendly. It is a green product that is made in the USA. You can take that old piece of furniture and turn it into a polished beauty or get that shabby chic look.
