The John Crawford Advisory Board at the SouthShore Regional Library in Ruskin has issued A Call To Artists for shows in January/February and March/April. They are seeking painting and mixed media pieces. Applications are due on Saturday, November 12. Applications can be picked up at the library located at 15816 Beth Shields Way in Ruskin.

Artists who are interested in submitting work for consideration, must submit four images either in a CD formatted for MS Windows or four photographs.
Selected artists will have work displayed in the Crawford Gallery at the library. Artwork is juried by the members of the John Crawford Advisory Board. Artist will be notified by December 1 if selected.

According to Laurie Burhop, Art Coordinator for the John Crawford Gallery at the library, “We view the artwork and decide which pieces would make a good show together.” Burhop added, “We are always looking for something new and different to add variety to our shows. We look for creativity, interesting subject matter and great techniques in selecting artwork for the shows.”

Not only do artists get their artwork displayed in a gallery setting, but they also attend an Artists’ Reception courtesy of the Friends of the SouthShore Regional Library. The receptions are usually held on the first Thursday of the month and are open to the public.

“The receptions are a nice way for the community to meet the artists and view their work. Burhop added, “The SouthShore Regional has always had a strong commitment to the arts and promoting art for people who might not necessarily get to an art gallery. Our receptions have been well arranged and we have had a terrific response to the exhibits. It really does enrich the library.”

The John Crawford Gallery is truly a lovely space. Burhop works hard to create thoughtful and compelling shows.

The library holds approximately five shows each year including two featuring painting, one featuring photography, a 6×6 show and an Instructors’ Show.
