Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. It is based on adult siblings Vanya and Sonia who reside in their family home. They mourn their lost dreams and missed opportunities. When their often-wrong, fortune-telling maid warns of impending dangers, and their movie star sister, Masha, arrives unexpectedly with young, sexy boy toy Spike, the family is launched into a rollicking weekend of one-upmanship, exposed nerves, and a lot of broken mugs.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is directed by Michael Mercer who has been in local community theatre for a while. Mercer taught drama at Bloomingdale Senior High School until 2006. He then formed his own community theatre company, The Frenzie-Life Theatre. Mercer has directed the last three PCE musicals.

Mercer said, “I am now at the helm of this very clever Christopher Durang comedy and could not be more excited. I really wanted to direct a show that was smart and witty but also one that tackles some very important themes. Hopefully, audiences will leave each performance laughing and also thinking and feeling something.”

Mercer added, “The cast is a mixture of older and younger actors. We are having a blast exploring all the possibilities at rehearsals.”
