It’s a question Valrico residents Mark and Deanna Alexander, owners of Pinch A Penny in Boyette/FishHawk, get asked a lot.

Is it difficult to work side by side with your spouse?

In a word, the couple, who have been married for 30 years, say no. “We lost the stress of working for someone else and we’re enjoying ourselves,” said Mark.

Last year the couple retired from successful careers at SweetBay and then started looking at businesses for sale. Mark and Deanna visited the Pinch A Penny store, located at 13448 Boyette Rd. in the River Springs Town Center, spoke with its owner and customers, and were sold.

“We both have a retail background and people’s pools fill their leisure time so they’re happy coming in the store,” said Mark.

Pinch A Penny is a pool supply store offering a great selection of pool and spa supplies including heaters, cleaners, chemicals and assorted pool toys. The Alexander’s store also sells The Big Green Egg, an egg-shaped ceramic cooker.

Pool owners can bring in a water sample for a free seven point computerized analysis, testing for chlorine, pH, acid or base demand, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabilizer and total dissolved solids.

Too much trouble to be a do-it-yourselfer? The store also offers an at-home pool maintenance and service.

“We really take care of both customers: those that take care of their own pool and those that want someone to do it for them.

The Alexanders recently attended their first trade show where they learned about the upcoming line of products that will soon be sold in their store.

“In addition to a new supply of toys and floats we will also be carrying a line of pet products, including shampoos and treatments,” said Mark. “We’ll even have pet floats.”

Pinch A Penny is open Monday – Saturday 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Stop in and see Mark or Deanna; they’ll be the ones with the big smiles.

“This job is so fun,” said Deanna.
